Charnwood will remember its fallen heroes this month.
Queen’s Park in Loughborough will host a poignant event on Remembrance Sunday on November 14 which will honour those who have served and are currently serving in our armed forces.
The service will be held at the Carillon Tower, the town’s War Memorial.
The Remembrance Sunday Parade will start from Brown’s Lane car park at Loughborough Leisure Centre at 10.25am and make its way to the Carillon for the service which starts at 10.50am.
The Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor Paul Baines said: “As Mayor, it is a real privilege to be involved in the borough’s Remembrance events, and to be able to recognise the incredibly brave people in the UK and throughout the Commonwealth who have fought and died for our country in conflicts all over the world.
“The Remembrance service and parade in Loughborough is always well-attended and reminds us of the ultimate sacrifice made by military and civilian servicemen and women in wartime.
“All these Individual sacrifices must never be forgotten. We are particularly pleased that this year means that, with the removal of Covid-19 restrictions, more members of the public will be able to attend to pay their respects. We call on the community in Charnwood to come together in their various groups on Remembrance Sunday to share the two minutes silence and help to maintain the memory of our fallen heroes.
“Conflicts continue to take place around the world involving UK citizens; conflicts in which our military and civilian service people have lost their lives, creating a devastating negative impact on their families. Your ongoing support for those families via financial support for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, whom this year mark their 100th year of being formed, remains very important and much needed. Please give generously.”
Last years’ service was held amid national Covid restrictions when people were asked to mark the occasion from home. This year people are welcome to attend but being advised there are likely to be crowds in and around the park.
The parade route has changed this year due to ongoing work in the town centre for the Bedford Square Regeneration Scheme.
This means the salute will take place just outside the park entrance gates in New Street and not in the Market Place as usual.
Granby Street car park will be closed on the morning of Remembrance Sunday. People attending and taking part in the parade are encouraged to park in Beehive Lane multi storey car park which is free of charge on Sundays. Loughborough Leisure Centre car park, Browns Lane, is for Leisure Centre users only.
The service will be led by Reverend Wendy Dalrymple, Chaplain, Royal British Legion, Loughborough Branch.
Charnwood Borough Council will be live-streaming the service on its Facebook page as well as providing updates on social media.
Other Remembrance Sunday services will take place around the borough.
People are being encouraged to share their thoughts and pictures about Remembrance events. Look for the hashtag #CharnwoodRemembers or tag us in on Facebook.
To prevent a build-up people trying to access Queen’s Park through the New Street gates following the parade, the gates will be closed at 10.30am to the public to enable the Civic Party and Community wreath layers to process into the park. It is advisable for the public to access the park through other gates on Granby Street, or Browns Lane.
Armistice Day will be commemorated on Thursday, November 11, with a service at 10.45am held at the Carillon Tower. The Last Post will be played and at 11am a two-minute silence will be observed.
