Reopening of non-essential shops across the borough

Below you will find some of the measures we have taken and are considering to help make sure people can shop safely. We’ll be rolling out some of these measures in some shopping areas across the borough.

We’re working with local businesses, Love Loughborough and other partners including town and parish councils. We also have staff out and about – our High Street Helpers – to monitor the situation and assist people.

• We have temporarily removed some parking bays in Ward’s End where the pavement is narrow so people can observe social distancing. We have installed barriers. They do not go all the way along on Ward’s End as we have left some room to allow for deliveries
• We will be introducing a  one-way system for pedestrians in certain areas of the town including, Cattle Market and Devonshire Square
• We are also planning to make Town Hall Passageway one-way for pedestrians
• We’ve added a few more stalls as more traders will be returning to the markets and the stalls are staying up for the time being
• We have staff out and about keeping an eye on the situation and assisting people if they can. They are also visiting high streets across the borough
• We are also considering removing parking bays in Devonshire Square to allow for social distancing. We may need more space for pedestrians and some market stalls. When further restrictions are lifted, we fully expect some businesses such as cafes may want to add seating outside their premises.
• We are looking at introducing similar measures in other parts of the borough

Business grants deadline looming

Small businesses financially hit by the coronavirus pandemic have just under a week to apply for a grant of up to £25,000.

Charnwood Borough Council has already received more than 200 applications for the discretionary grant fund for companies that have previously been unable to claim government financial support.

The deadline for applications is 8am on Monday, 22 June.

Have your say on Loughborough Town Deal

Residents and businesses are being encouraged to have a say and contribute towards a plan which will shape the future of Loughborough. 

The Loughborough Town Deal is aiming to secure up to £25 million of government funding to transform the town and has drawn up a draft investment plan which is now out for consultation. 

The project is being led by the Loughborough Town Deal board involving a range of organisations, including Charnwood Borough Council, Loughborough University, Loughborough College, Love Loughborough, Leicestershire County Council, the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership, Charnwood Together Economy and Skills Group, local businesses and Loughborough MP Jane Hunt. 

The draft investment plan outlines four areas of focus: 

• Physical regeneration and how Loughborough functions as a place 
• Equipping people, communities and businesses for the future 
• A smart, green Loughborough 
• Loughborough – ‘innovation city’, global national and regional destination
