In November's issue, we look back on our recent activities which range from our annual science conference to the launch of two more episodes of our podcast. We hope you enjoy the latest issue and let us know what you think on social media.
Coming together at the Cefas Science Conference
The annual Cefas Science Conference is an opportunity for Cefas colleagues to come together to share and discuss the amazing science they have been doing.
This year, we were delighted to welcome a broad range of partners from across aquatic science, policy and non-governmental organisations to join the conversations and debates. Feedback from participants has told us that they welcomed the discussions and insights generated around the role of aquatic science, innovation and collaboration.
The key take home message from many of the attendees was that we need to work together better to solve global marine issues.
We also launched our brand-new organisational video to help everyone understand the role that Cefas plays.

Celebrating World Fisheries Day
Tuesday 21st November was World Fisheries Day. A day to highlight the importance of healthy ocean ecosystems and to ensure sustainable stocks of fisheries in the world.
Cefas joined the celebrations across our social media channels. This included the launch of #Insight360, a new tool to tackle bycatch in fisheries and celebrating the Fisheries Sensitivity Mapping and Displacement partnership that is making waves to map constraints and opportunities for fisheries and offshore wind. Finally, we launched another new episode of our podcast, "Unchatted Waters", exploring how our research vessel marine surveys support fisheries data collection.

Sylvia Earle names St Helena as latest Hope Spot
From the Blue Belt programme came the exciting news that St Helena’s MPA has become a ‘Hope Spot'. The organisation Mission Blue highlights special areas of marine environment that are scientifically critical to ocean health, and recognises the work undertaken to protect and sustainably manage them.
The Blue Belt Programme is proud to have supported St Helena on their journey to designate and manage their Marine Protected Area, and continues to provide support today. St Helena is the second UK Overseas Territory in the Blue Belt Programme to become a Hope Spot, after its sister island of Ascension achieved the award back in 2013.

World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week
World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign that is celebrated annually (18 to 24 November) to improve awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance and encourage best practices. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the biggest global health issues of our time. Cefas joined the conversations by launching a new episode of our podcast, "Unchatted Waters".
In this episode, we discuss the microscopic world of pathogens, bacteria and viruses, and how to keep our seafood safe to eat.

Inspiring the next generation of aquatic scientists
This month we took part in a range of events within our local community in East Anglia to showcase Cefas careers and the pathways available. We paid a visit to our partnership secondary school, Cliff Park, Ormiston Academy Trust and attended the annual John Innes Centre career event, this year focused on helping young people find their future. We also visited Lowestoft Sixth Form College to provide a Cefas Masterclass - a day of interactive activities, introducing the students to aquatic science.
These events help support our continued aim of inspiring the next generation of aquatic scientists.
