Diagnosis support pack

DS

Have you seen our Diagnosis Support Pack?

Our Diagnosis Support Pack (DSP) has been coproduced by families for families following a diagnosis of a neurodiversity, and contains information, resources and signposting in a variety of media (video's, infographics, animations), split into 14 sections - from sleep to medication, and lots more.

The DSP covers the following topics:

  1. Introduction
  2. Positives of Neuro-diversities
  3. Holistic Approach
  4. What to expect at your appointment
  5. Sleep
  6. Medication
  7. Talking about a diagnosis
  8. Sensory Processing Needs
  9. Mental Heath
  10. Supporting Social Communication Development in Autism
  11. Best Practice Guide – for professionals
  12. Contact Information and Resources
  13. Jargon Buster
  14. Printable resources and links

Families have described the experience of their child receiving a neurodiversity diagnosis (e.g. Autism or ADHD) with mixed emotions and following the lengthy diagnosis process are left with little information, or understanding of ‘what next?’  They told us that a 'one-stop shop' for information, resources and signposting following a diagnosis would be useful, and they would like this information to be accessible and from a trusted source.

The pack has been co-produced with the help of parents, young people, local Parent Carer Forums, CAMHS, Education Psychology and other key partners.

All pages have been made easy to follow, with links that that guide you through the pack.  As well as making the pack informative and useful, it was really important to us that the pack uplifts people and celebrates neurodiversity. We know many families find receiving a diagnosis a challenging time but empowering messages and having positive role models are so important to help parents/carers and young people on their journey.

Protective Behaviour Practice discussions

CBC Early Help Team will be running a monthly virtual practice discussion to support all practitioners who are delivering protective behaviours sessions across CBC. The sessions are for practitioners looking to start up sessions and those already running sessions. There will be resources and session plan’s available to support all those that attend the discussion.

As well as resource sharing there will be an opportunity to discuss work with individual children or groups (the child/ children will be anonymised). This can be for cases where you feel you need further support either because you or stuck or because you are unsure how to start and plan the sessions.

CHUMs Workshops

These workshops are designed as a starting point for families with children who have low level difficulties and may not have accessed support from mental health services. If parents are concerned that their child’s problem is causing a moderate/severe impact on their life or they are presenting with risky behaviours (self-harm, suicidal ideations), then these series of workshops are unlikely to address these concerns. If this is the case we would recommend making a CHUMS/CAMHS referral on our website; http://chums.uk.com/bedfordshire-and-luton-referral-forms/.

Please note that spaces for workshops are limited and allocated on a first-come, first served basis.

HAF Easter holiday activities

HAF

HAF directory has now been updated with the details for the Easter Holiday period. The link for the directory is below.

https://www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/holiday-activities?page=1

As you know, the HAF programme is available for any child in Central Bedfordshire who is in receipt of free school meals and who is in school years from reception through to year 11. For every child that is in receipt of free school meals, families will need to register their children via the CBC web page . Each child needs to be registered separately this year and parents/carers will need to provide a HAF registration number to the provider of the sessions/activities they want to book for their children – a different number is needed for each child.

New registration page

 https://www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/school-hols

-food

The DfE will be reviewing our data from the activities this year in order to track children and so it is imperative that every child participating in the programme (which is using HAF funding from the DfE) has their own separate unique reference number. All children who are in receipt of FSM should register via the website but if you have a vulnerable child that you think would benefit from attending some sessions and they are not in receipt of FSM, please do get in touch as I can then allocate a separate reference number to each of those children.

BRIF - Building Resilience in Families

BRIF is held weekly every Tuesday - Ivel valley   The panel is a multi-agency team working effectively to offer very early intervention to children and their families, to prevent and reduce the escalation of incidents or issues.

The BRIF Panel consists of a core group including Housing, 0-19 Service, Police, Adult Mental Health, Children Centres and other key partners/agencies relevant to families or to the issues prevalent in the locality.

The only ‘criteria’ for families brought to the BRIF panel is that they are not open to Early Help or statutory Children Services. Professionals may see an emerging need within a family and feel that they would benefit from other services or feel that the input of ideas and suggestions from the panel. There are no set referral criteria as this takes away the purpose of the panel.

All referrals are made using the attached referral form and are sent to the relevant Community Partner. Verbal consent must be received from parents prior to being discussed at panel.

We will invite you to present your referral at the BRIF panel. This will in some instances expediate support for the family as the referrer will be there to answer any questions the BRIF panel has.

This will avert a delay in support for the family, as will we not have to contact you to ask any questions.

Once a referral is sent to me Kerry.Nielow@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk, I will contact the referrer with the Microsoft Teams link to join that week’s BRIF panel, you do not need to be there for the full hour just for the time it takes to present your case.

The recommended actions will still be sent to you after the meeting.

We would also welcome your input at BRIF for local intelligence purposes, should you know of any local information that has an input on families and the community please share it with us by coming along to BRIF or emailing to me.

Examples of cases brought to BRIF panel

o   Housing issues

o   Parenting Issues/Behaviours at home.

o   Non-school attendance.

o   Parental conflict.

o   Low level parental mental health.
