Numbers of cases up this week

The number of new cases of COVID-19 has increased this week, especially among younger people, while the numbers in local hospitals have slightly decreased. Two deaths were registered in our area in the last reporting week.

Over the last week (week ending 8 September), cases in Central Bedfordshire have gone up by 173 to 972 new cases (336.7 per 100,000).

Among our neighbours:

  • Bedford - 488 new cases, down 16 (281.6 per 100,000) with 1 death reported
  • Luton - 851 new cases, up 137 (399.4 per 100,000) with 4 deaths reported
  • Milton Keynes - 833 new cases, up 78 (309.1 cases per 100,000) and 3 deaths reported

Although the vaccines are proving to be effective in reducing serious illnesses, the increase in COVID-19 positive cases is worrying and a sign that we must not drop our guard. As we go into Autumn and spend more time indoors it is even more important that we follow the guidance to keep ourselves and others safe.

  • Meet outside if you can and open windows and doors whenever meeting people indoors
  • If you think you have symptoms stay at home and take a PCR test
  • Continue to wear face coverings in crowded places and on public transport
  • Check in to venues when you go out
  • Wash your hands with soap regularly, and for at least 20 seconds
  • Get vaccinated
