Case numbers as high as they were in January

Cases of COVID-19 have risen dramatically again this week, and the epidemic is now at the level last seen in January. Fortunately, the number of people with COVID-19 needing hospital care remains stable but sadly there was one death here in the last reporting week.

Over the last week (week ending 21 July), cases in Central Bedfordshire have gone up by 636  to 1,620 new cases (561.2 per 100,000).

Among our neighbours, cases are also up:

  • Bedford - 765 new cases (441.5 per 100,000) with 3 deaths reported
  • Luton - 799 new cases (375.0 per 100,000) with 1 death reported
  • Milton Keynes – 1,254 new cases (465.4 cases per 100,000) and no deaths reported

Although restrictions on what we can do have been eased, it’s still important to stay cautious and help protect ourselves and others.

  • Wash your hands regularly and for at least 20 seconds with soap.
  • Meet up outside or if you’re indoors, open windows or doors if you have visitors.
  • If you think you might have COVID-19 symptoms, take a PCR test and stay home.
  • Wear face coverings in crowded places to help protect others.
  • Check in with the NHS COVID-19 app when you’re out.
  • Get vaccinated if you are 18 or over.
