On 16th - 17th February, William completed a two-day work experience placement with Carmarthenshire County Council housing team, gaining hands-on insight into plumbing, carpentry and property maintenance.
After attending a Health & Safety induction at Cillefwr, William spent his first day on-site with the plumbing team. He supported work across five locations, assisting with the removal of toilets ahead of new flooring installations, carrying tools and learning the importance of following Health & Safety procedures.
On his second day, William worked alongside the carpentry team, helping to install shelves, remove doors and prepare areas for improvement works. He observed tasks closely, handed over tools and learned more about working efficiently as part of a team.
William has expressed a strong interest in pursuing a career in plumbing and hopes to apply for an apprenticeship when he finishes school to gain hands-on experience and a recognised qualification. He also showed interest in returning during future school holidays to gain further experience.
During his placement, William developed a better understanding of the vital role the housing department plays in managing approximately 9,000 homes and preparing void properties for re-letting to help prevent homelessness.
The void team: “Lee, Ben and Ashley all said that he did well over the 2 days. He was keen to be involved with everything they were doing and showed a willingness to learn. It’s good to see someone of his age showing enthusiasm for the work.”
Providing opportunities like this helps inspire young people and support the development of our future workforce.
