Keeping you and your home safe from fire
 |
|
In recent months, there have been fires at some Council owned homes within Carmarthenshire. Thankfully, everyone was kept safe, but these incidents show how important electrical and fire safety are in our homes.
These simple tips can help to keep you, your family and your homes safe:
|
- Plug certain high-power appliances, such as washing machines and tumble dryers directly into a wall socket (instead of using an extension cable)
- Do not overload sockets/extension leads as there is a limit to how many amps of power these can take
- Do not plug extension leads into each other
- Make sure gaming consoles are well ventilated and are turned off when not in use
- Closely monitor electrical items used in out buildings such as garages and sheds
- Do not place electrical items on top of other appliances, such as cookers
- Keep to one plug per socket
- Charge items safely on hard surfaces and don’t leave them to charge overnight
- If buying second hand electrical items, check if they are PAT (safety) tested and have a British or European safety mark
- Check your smoke alarms once a week and replace the batteries regularly (this is a requirement of your Occupation Contract)
- Look out for signs of dangerous or loose wiring, such as scorch marks, hot plugs/sockets, blown fuses and flickering lights
- Unplug appliances when they are not in use and when you go to bed
- Be careful when using portable heaters – keep them clear of curtains and furniture, turn them off when unattended and keep them secure so they can’t fall over
- Clean appliance vents (such as tumble dryers) regularly
- Report any faults such as scorch marks, sparks and smells to our repairs service immediately
- Never run cables under carpets or rugs

Pets in the home
Pets are a source of joy, companionship and emotional support for many people. However, it’s important that everyone living in a Council owned home respects the terms set out in their Occupation Contract to ensure a safe and pleasant environment for everyone.
All residents living in Council owned homes with a private entrance can keep one dog and/or one cat without seeking permission. However, if you wish to keep more pets than this or any other species, you must send us a written request.
If permission is agreed, there will be conditions in place which must be followed. Failure to do so will result in permission being withdrawn and any serious breaches could result in charges for damage or legal action.
To request permission or for more information contact your housing officer or e-mail Housing@carmarthenshire.gov.uk

Free boiler servicing
Annual boiler servicing is free and is an essential part of keeping you and your home safe, especially if your boiler has not been used over the spring and summer months. We must also carry out regular electrical safety testing.
Having your boiler serviced regularly will help your boiler to run more efficiently, costing you less to run as well as making sure that it is safe. We will also check your carbon monoxide and smoke alarms as part of the service.
It’s important that we are able to access your home to carry out this work. If you are unable to make the appointment provided, please let us know.
If you experience an issue with your boiler or carbon monoxide alarm, please tell us. Call 01267 234567 or report a repair online.
