Changes to our services

We further extended our services from Monday 21 June to allow wider access to facilities for residents and community groups.

Due to the postponement of Stage 4 of the Government Roadmap, libraries won't be returning to their full service offer for the time being, but our 33 libraries will see further extensions to current opening hours.

Rhymetimes and Storytimes sessions will continue on a ticket-only basis, which can be booked on the Eventbrite website.

Meeting room hire for community groups has also resumed, although this will be subject to restrictions including room capacity and the requirement to complete a risk assessment beforehand. All meetings must comply with the current Government restrictions around who can meet and for what purpose.

For more information about library opening hours and services, please go to our libraries webpage.

fun palace

Thursday 8th July 2021, 2:30pm, on Zoom

Cambridgeshire Libraries is taking part in Fun Palaces, October 2021! What that looks like... is up to you.

Are you a local person with passions, skills or interests you’d love to share with others? Join us for a workshop to find out more - libraries staff and communities can meet to talk about what a Fun Palace could be in your area and how you could make one together.

This is an informal workshop, with plenty of chances to talk with other participants and with people who have made Fun Palaces before.

Fun Palaces supports volunteers, grassroots communities, new and established organisations and practitioners across the UK (and beyond) to make Fun Palaces - free, local events using arts, craft, science, tech, digital, heritage and sport, to celebrate each unique community and the skills and interests of those who live there. The first weekend of October every year is Fun Palaces weekend of action.

This workshop will happen on Zoom. Book free tickets here: Cambridgeshire Libraries Fun Palaces Workshop July Tickets, Thu 8 Jul 2021 at 14:30 | Eventbrite

Digital Buddy image

Can you help us to help others?

Cambridgeshire Libraries are looking for volunteers to help with simple digital queries.

We need people who can assist customers with online bus pass renewals, and to work with those who are gaining new IT skills.

Interested? Send an email to volunteers@cambridgeshire.gov.uk stating which library or libraries in Cambridgeshire you would like to volunteer at and a member of the library team will get back to you. Or call into your local library and talk to a member of staff.

You will be given full guidance on the Digital Buddy volunteer role and be talked through the Covid-19 Library risk assessment before being asked to start helping customers.

We ask our Digital Buddies to give us a regular contribution of an hour or so each week, arranged to suit you and the library.

Business & IP Centres (BIPCs)

Councils join forces with British Library to roll-out small business support and boost local economy.

The British Library has announced a major expansion of its highly successful network of library-based Business & IP Centres (BIPCs) to over 100 regional and local libraries across England, including in Ely, Huntingdon and Wisbech.

Following last year’s pledge of £13million in Treasury funding towards the expansion, Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council have been allocated a portion of this funding to equip the libraries in Ely, Huntingdon and Wisbech with Business & IP Centre spaces, resources and services by 2023, building on the proven support already available at Cambridge Central Library and Peterborough Central Library. This funding will also be used to provide an upgrade to the existing Business & IP Centre within Peterborough Central Library.

Click on the image below to view a video explaining the BIPC and how it can help you.

BPIC image

While each centre, including Cambridge Central Library and Peterborough Central Library, is equipped with a core set of resources, such as up-to-date market research and business databases, provided by the British Library, they are brought to life by a tailored and highly individual programme of events, workshops and one-to-ones, delivered in collaboration with local business leaders, role model entrepreneurs and community partners. Read more here.

If you would like more news and information on what support is available to you, please subscribe to the monthly Business & IP Centre Cambridgeshire and Peterborough newsletter here.

Health Information Week 5th - 11th July

To join in this national campaign, we are updating our newsletter article from last year and sharing it again with you.  Please feel free to forward it on to your family and friends. #HIW2021

Health information week is a national multi-sector campaign promoting high quality information to the public. Good quality health information has a positive impact on our ability to make an information decision about our health and care, to manage illnesses effectively, and to maintain a better quality of life.

health information

Health conditions

When you or your family are unwell, finding information about the conditions, symptoms and treatments might be the first step you want to take, and you can always rely on the NHS website. You can also try patient.info, a website certified with quality marks for health information, where you will find the easy-to-use Symptom Checker to help you identify whether you need to seek immediate medical attention.

For specific long-term conditions, many charities and organizations offer good information and support, such as British Heart FoundationDiabetes UKMacmillan Cancer Support, British Lung Foundation and Arthritis Action.

Patient support

Being unwell, going through treatments, and receiving care can be stressful experiences. The Patients Association provides advice such as Make the most of your GP appointment to help patients take up an active role in making informed decisions regarding treatments and care. HealthTalk website contains a substantial collection of videos in which people share personal experiences of their conditions and of the health care they received.

If you have queries about local health and care services, Healthwatch Cambridgeshire can help. If you want to help make a difference to health and social care in your area, get in touch with Healthwatch and get involved.

Health myths debunked

During the pandemic of covid-19, conflicting news and information circulated on social media have caused some confusion. You will find many false claims about coronavirus demystified by BBC News Reality Check, Channel 4 News Fact Check, and the UK independent fact checking charity Full Fact.

Sense about Science is an independent charity that champions the public interest in sound science.  The charity’s Ask for Evidence tool offers guidance to allow you to check a claim yourself!

Libraries and Wellbeing

Libraries and Wellbeing

Our new webpages to support your health and wellbeing

After a long year of managing our life around the pandemic, we and our community have emerged more resilient and health conscious.  While we continue to keep ourselves and others safe from infections, we also want to find new inspiration to support our health and wellbeing.

Cambridgeshire Libraries have created new webpages under the banner of Libraries and Wellbeing.  This new website explains how your libraries can support your health and wellbeing. The health information directory contains links to resources and support, national as well as local. We hope you will find our information pages helpful.

We will update the Libraries and Wellbeing site frequently and the health information directory remains a work in progress. Please visit www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/LibraryAndWellbeing and tell us what you think. Your feedback will help us improve our services online and in libraries.
