Cash boost to tackle vacant buildings in Bargoed and Blackwood town centres

Blackwood and Bargoed High Streets

Caerphilly county borough council will plough up to £4.5million of Welsh Government funding into Bargoed and Blackwood town centres as part of ambitious plans to transform the local High Street.

A loan of up to £4.5m has been secured from the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns fund to re-purpose a number of underutilised or empty properties in both town centres.

A similar approach has been taken in Caerphilly, where successful property acquisition has been established with a mix of WG loan funding and CCBC finance


​Risca women prosecuted for running unlicensed dog home boarding and doggy daycare facilities

TWO women have admitted keeping a pet boarding business without a licence and unfair trading.

Deborah Jane Edwards and Lydia Perkins, both from Risca, pleaded guilty when they appeared at Newport Magistrates' Court.

Lydia Perkins was sentenced on 1 April 2025 at Newport Magistrates Court to a £200 fine, £80 victim surcharge and £2000 costs.

Deborah Edwards is due to be sentenced at Newport Crown Court on 27 April 2025.

Retail, Leisure and Hospitality Rate Relief 2025/26

The Welsh Government has issued details of a new temporary business rate relief scheme under which retail, leisure and hospitality properties will benefit from April 2025.

The 2025/26 scheme offers a discount of 40% on non-domestic rate bills for eligible occupied properties but the relief is subject to a £110,000 cap on the amount each business can claim across properties occupied by the same business in Wales.

All eligible businesses will have to complete an online declaration form which is now available on the Council’s website

Carlton Building Solutions receives funding boost

Carlton Building Solutions Ltd, a family-run business based in Cwmcarn for over a decade, has secured £41,597.50 in UK Shared Prosperity Fund grants from Caerphilly Borough County Council.

This funding will support the purchase of a new large-capacity forklift, enhancing the company's ability to transport shipping containers and take on additional projects.

Founded 11 years ago, Carlton Building Solutions specialises in the customisation and refurbishment of shipping containers and the construction of modular building units


Renewal of PSPO for dog control

Caerphilly County Borough Council has approved the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for dog control for another three years following public consultation.

The PSPO contains restrictions in relation to dog control as the council aims to promote responsible dog ownership and reduce complaints for dog issues such as dog fouling.

The Council has approved a Public Spaces Protection Order in respect of six offences which came into force on 1st March 2025.

The Caerphilly Challenge Series returns on Saturday, May 10th, with the famous ‘Twmbarlwm Trek’.

Following on from the successful Wild Boar 2024, the challenge continues in the stunning surrounds of the Sirhowy Valley with its challenging terrain, rich countryside and commanding views.

The start and finish of this year’s challenge is Coleg Gwent, Cross Keys campus.

The Caerphilly Challenge Series will have routes suitable for all fitness levels and abilities as follows.

  • 1 to 5 mile ‘Lets walk Challenge’ (Led walk)
  • 9-11 mile ‘Ramblers Cymru’ Challenge (Led walk)
  • 14–16-mile route (self-led challenge and led walk)
  • 20–22-mile route (self-led challenge and led walk)

Rhymney line transformation - check timetable before you travel

Transport for Wales are upgrading the Rhymney line as part of the next phase of the South Wales Metro.

Beginning in March, we’ll be undertaking an intensive 8-month programme of engineering work on the upper Rhymney line, from Caerphilly to Rhymney station.

To deliver this intensive 8-month programme of work safely, there will be periods where the railway line will be closed and rail replacement services in operation to keep passengers moving.
