Speech, Language and Communication Training Pathway 2023-2028

Talk with me

Did you know that 4.8% of school children in Wales have speech, language, and communication needs?

The Speech, Language and Communication Training Pathway has been created to support practitioners working with children aged 0 – 4 years 11 months in the Caerphilly county borough.

Early Years partners have developed this training pathway to enable practitioners, to clearly identify what training they need, how to access it, and what opportunities there are to further develop their skills and knowledge. Along with training, it provides access to toolkits and self-evaluation frameworks for practitioners to use.

You can view the document on our website. Please take the time to read it and understand the implications for your role. Our Childcare Team will be available to explore this with you and what it means for your team.

Let's Talk message of the month: Our best place is face to face

Let's Talk - tip 3

Our best place is face to face’. If you are with a child, the best place to be is at their level (even if this means lying on the floor!) so you can see each other’s faces. This means you can:

  • See each other’s facial expressions
  • See what the child is interested in and give the right words to match what they can see/are doing
  • The child can watch your mouth to see how you make the sounds in words

Why not try to be face to face for 5 extra minutes a day and see how much it changes your interactions!

You can find this strategy in the 10 tips to help me learn to talk booklet.

For more information on interacting with young children, visit https://gov.wales/talk-with-me.

Selective Mutism

Selective Mutism

Selective Mutism is a complex childhood anxiety disorder characterised by a child's inability to speak in certain social situations, such as at nursery or school, despite being able to speak comfortably at home. This video, produced by a CAMHS Speech and Language Therapist at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, aims to support practitioners in childcare settings by showing them how to identify when a child may have selective mutism and what steps to take next.

Website Update: The childcare provider information page is moving!

website

Over the past few weeks, we have been reviewing our website to ensure all information is accurate, complete, and well-organised. Some of you have mentioned that the "Information for Childcare Providers" section can be difficult to select on smaller screens because it is located at the bottom of the Childcare menu. To address this, we have created a new section under the "About Us" menu called "Professionals Working in Early Years and Childcare." Here, you will find a subsection titled "Information for Childcare Settings in the Caerphilly County Borough," which contains all your relevant pages.

This section aims to provide you with easy access to essential information, including training, funded placements, registration guidance, the Healthy Early Years scheme, and more. We value your feedback, so if you have any suggestions for improving the content, please let us know by emailing the earlyyearshub@caerphilly.gov.uk or calling 01443 863232.

Laura Thomas - Play Sufficiency Co-Ordinator

lt

My name is Laura Thomas, and I would like to introduce myself as the new Play Sufficiency Officer for the borough.  I have worked within the local LA for over 12 years before moving across to Play Caerphilly early this year. The next couple of months is an exciting time for Play Caerphilly as we grow our team and deliver our Play Holiday Provision. Alongside this we are looking forward to working in partnership with the Early Years team to deliver 7 Play in the park events. To celebrate National Play Day, we will also be issuing Play Day grants that childcare settings and providers can apply for to deliver Play Day activities within their own settings to celebrate the importance of play in children’s lives. If you would like to find out any more information regarding Play Caerphilly or if you are looking for any support in upskilling staff/volunteers to gain a PlayWorker qualification, please just get in contact willil17@caerphilly.gov.uk.
