The second phase of the Flying Start Expansion has been a huge success.
We would like to pass on our congratulations and thanks to all providers who have been involved. Without each and every one of you, we would not have been able to reach our goals to give families the opportunities and choice to access Flying Start funded places.
Your hard work and commitment have been recognised by the whole of the Early Years Team. You have come on a journey with us to provide high quality childcare and the effort that you have all made to improve your provision has been fantastic, with the children at the heart of everything that you do.
Please feel free to share your successes far and wide to all settings yet to consider coming on to the DPS. The opportunity is still available, please either get in touch for advice and support or follow the link below.

We appreciate that there have been a lot of changes to our service recently and have introduced several new forms and systems you need to use. So we thought it might be useful to put all the links you need in one place.

If you are providing Flying Start, Assisted Places, or Supported Places, payments are made directly into your bank no later than the 1st day of the month for childcare provided in the previous month.
The link below shows the payment schedule for the next 12 months and the deadline for submission of a new Individual Child Placement (ICP) form to meet the next payment date. It is important that once you have agreed to provide a placement, you submit an ICP straight away to avoid any delaying is receiving your payment.

Over the last 9 months we have rolled out training to support the childcare sector in Caerphilly with implementing the New Curriculum for Wales.
As well as promoting and signposting settings to the professional learning modules that can be found on Hwb: Repository - Hwb (gov.wales), we have also rolled out courses such as Elizabeth Jarman Communication Friendly Spaces training to over 75 childcare practitioners so they could understand how their environment can create a welcoming learning space that leads to rich and purposeful play.
We also rolled out Froebel training to our Early Years Education Providers and Caerphilly Early Years team. This training looked at the pedagogy of German pioneer Friedrich Froebel (1782-1852), who invented the kindergarten in 1840 and advocated 'learning through play' through child-led activities. The participants considered Froebel’s principles and explored how it underpins and supports our current practice today.

As we move forward we will continue to look at training and continuing professional development opportunities to support practitioners with the New Curriculum for Wales.
Please visit our Early Years training page for our usual courses and new ones over the coming months.
Preparing for the Coronation of King Charles III 6th May and National Sun Awareness Week 6th-13th May 2023!
Welsh words of the month:
- Crown – Coron
- King – Brenin
- Queen – Brenhines
- Castle - Castell
- Sun cream – Eli haul
- Sunglasses – Sbectol haul
- Sun hat – Het haul
- Shade – Cysgod
- Hot - Poeth
Activity suggestions:
Be a ‘king’ or ‘queen’ for the day whilst using the Welsh words of the month; let the children design their own crowns and royal robes! Who will be the best dressed?
Let’s be sun and shade detectives! Search for the most shaded spots in the setting and let’s talk about sun safety, and refer to the Welsh words of the month.
Did you know, signing can support children to learn to talk? It helps because:
- It encourages us to be face to face when interacting with children
- It adds a visual helper to support the child to learn important words
- It helps us slow down and give more thinking time to the person we are talking with
- It highlights the most important words
- It’s fun!
It can also help a child get their message across independently if their speech isn’t being understood. The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board use Signalong to support little ones to learn to talk. Take a look at our Youtube channel – why not find 3 signs to start using day to day!

We have a dedicated section for childcare providers where you can also view any previous e-bulletins you may have missed. Please let us know how you think this could be improved.
