Are you looking to increase the use of Welsh Language within your setting? Would you like some support and guidance with the use of a step-by-step programme which encourages the use of Welsh Language in everyday life?
We have spaces available to recruit new settings on to the Road to Bilingualism. If your setting would benefit from this support please keep a look out for the training that will offer further guidance on the scheme in addition to opportunity to sign up.
With the government’s target in mind, we can help reach one million Welsh speakers in Wales by 2050 that will ensure the Welsh language thrives for future generations.

The next Big Welsh Rhyme Time will take place from 6–10 February 2023.
Big Welsh Rhyme Time is the annual celebration of sharing rhymes, poems and songs organised by BookTrust Cymru as part of our Welsh Government funded programmes.
It aims to promote and encourage fun and enjoyable rhyme sharing activity for young children in Wales aged 0-5, in Welsh and English. It supports early communication and literacy skills and inspires creativity.
In February 2022 children in the Early Years and Foundation Phase took part in Big Welsh Rhyme Time events all over Wales and online.
This year’s key message will be ‘Rhyming fun for everyone’.
Activities will include:
- Distribution of up to 25,000 Big Welsh Rhyme Time stickers and certificates to schools, nurseries, libraries, children’s centres and other partners working with children and families in the early years
- Big Welsh Rhyme Time themed activities and sessions in participating settings
- A social media campaign promoting Big Welsh Rhyme Time and encouraging families to share rhymes and songs
- PR activities to promote Big Welsh Rhyme Time and encourage settings and families to get involved

Making comments about things your child can see is a great way to support them to learn to talk. You can do this in everyday routines:
- Whilst walking to the shop, ‘it’s a dog, it’s a big fluffy dog’
- In a supermarket ‘we need bananas, the bananas are heavy!’
- At the park, ‘you’re climbing up high’, ‘the girl is jumping’.
- Whilst putting the washing away together, ‘I’ve got a stripy sock’, ‘the washing is wet’.
- Making lunch together ‘let’s pour the milk’, ‘wow, that’s a big carrot’.
It’s never too early to start doing this! Hearing the same words over and over helps children to learn them so you might find yourself talking about your child’s favourite things regularly. Make a comment and wait in case they want to respond. If they give it a try, say it back to them. If they say ‘nana’ you can say ‘yes it’s a banana’. Have fun showing them all the words for the things they see every day!
