Rhymney Library and Idris Davies Community Hub

RYB Childrens

Library Services have successfully bid for funding from the Welsh Government.  A Capital Transformation Grant, combined with funding from the CCBC Place Shaping Fund at a total of £289,000 will be invested in Rhymney Library.

Listening to residents’ views has helped us to begin shaping the services our library needs to support the community in the best possible way.  Therefore our new plans include:

  • Reconfigure and refurbish both floors at Rhymney Library including a lift upgrade.
  • Create a new modern lending library for adults and children.
  • Expand our Welsh language and Welsh culture offer.
  • Create a new Laptop Lounge space and comfortable seating areas.
  • Offer a hot drinks facility.
  • Offer study, community and private meeting spaces.
  • Spaces for you to meet partner organisations including officers from CCBC Council.

We are hoping to begin the project in the Autumn and whilst there will be some temporary closure of the library, we’ll continue to work closely with our CCBC Building Team to try and make this as minimal as possible.

We'll provide regular updates in future editions of Expand Your Shelf.

It's easy to join AND it's FREE!

Whatever their talents or interests, they can join the Gadgeteers for the Summer Reading Challenge running at all our libraries from Saturday 9th July to Saturday 10th September 2022.

Children are asked to read six books to help the Gadgeteers.       At the same time, they can discover the amazing science and innovation that lies behind    the world around them. Children will receive rewards for each of the books they read and      if they complete the challenge by reading 6 books, they earn their Gadgeteers certificate    and medal.  There will also be a prize draw for all children who have completed the      Summer Reading Challenge and the Grand Prize winner will receive a £100 voucher.

Children can read any library book of their choice - fiction, non-fiction or picture books,          e-Books or e-Audio.

Meet the Library Team

Library Staff - Is

Caerphilly Library Service welcomes a new employee to Risca Library.

The KickStart scheme allows employers to create high quality 6-month work placements to support young people to gain meaningful work, ranging from Administration to Care Worker Support.

Caerphilly Library Service are really pleased to be involved with the scheme and welcome Isobelle to Risca Library.

Looking at Isobelle's smile we're really happy that she's enjoying her placement.  As Isobelle says, 'I'm really enjoying learning about the amazing services the library offers.  Meeting new people every day is so rewarding and If I can help in any way, I leave work with an even bigger smile.'

Keep smiling Isobelle!

And finally........

We've 'borrowed' some quotes from Goodwill Librarian that we'd love to share with you.

Isaac Asimov - 'Any book worth banning is a book worth reading.'

Anonymous - 'When you read a line that is so well-written, you just close the book and stare at the wall for a minute...'

Hannah Sherman (student with Dyslexia)- 'Many people think that listening to a book is cheating.  I tell them that the words are still entering your brain, creating pictures, telling a story.  It's not a crutch, it's just a different way to get to the same place.'

Charlaine Harris- 'Here's to books, the cheapest vacation you can buy.'
