Introduction to the new Curriculum for Wales training

Do you want to learn more about the new Curriculum in Wales? Do you work in a childcare setting in one of the following local authorities? Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport, or Torfaen. Do you work in a childcare setting that is not funded to deliver Foundation Phase Nursery provision? If this applies to you then join one of the sessions we are holding to support practitioners in understanding the principles of the new curriculum for Wales and what this means for your setting and practice.

For further details see Webinars in Wales and Events in Wales, to book on or to find out more email paceycymru@pacey.org.uk.

Updating Dewis

Dewis Logo

Can we remind you of the importance of keeping your Dewis record updated. This is your responsibility.

We currently have 93 expired resources in Dewis which means that these are not appearing on the Dewis website and families looking for these services cannot find them.

Check now if your resources are visible on the FIS website.

Remember, you need to log into your Dewis account at least every 6 months to review your resource(s).

Once reviewed, you must amend the next review date on the publish page and tick the box to indicate that the resource is ready for publishing. Some providers are not ticking this box which means the resource does not appear to us to publish.

Make sure you check ALL the resources you own. For example, if you are a Day Nursery providing Day Care, Holiday Club, Breakfast Club and After School Club, you will have 4 resources you will need to check.

Dewis does send reminder emails in the weeks leading up to a record expiring. It is important that you take note of these emails and login to Dewis to update your resources.

If you are having any difficulty with this, support is available so please contact the Early Years Hub on 01443 863232 or email fis@caerphilly.gov.uk

Interested in attending a Dewis training session? If so, please request it here.

We want to hear from families that have benefitted from the Childcare Offer for Wales

COFW

We’re looking for families that have already benefitted from the Childcare Offer for Wales and are willing to share their story so we can continue to spread the word about the Offer.

Do you know anyone?

If you know a family that currently/have recently received the Offer, and you think they would be willing to share their story, we want to hear from you.

We want to capture as much diversity as possible, so that we share stories from across all parts of Wales, including families from all backgrounds such as LGBTQ and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic families, Welsh speaking families, single parent and blended families etc. Each family that takes part will receive a £50 voucher for their time.

National Minimum Standards – changes to qualification requirements reminder

NMS

The Out of School Childcare Sector (this does not include Childminders) have until September 2022 to ensure 50% of their staff are qualified to at least level 2 in Playwork with 50% of those qualified holding a full level 3 Playwork qualification.

The letter that has been circulated widely can be found here: Extension to the deadline for achieving a required qualification to comply with the National Minimum Standards (gov.wales)

If you or your staff need to upskill, funded Playwork qualifications are available through Colleges, training providers and organisations such as Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids Clubs.

New opportunities to deliver Flying Start and Early Years Education places

SLC

Over the next months we will be opening up the Framework for additional providers to come on board with us to deliver Flying Start and/or early Years Education places to meet increased demand. We have a small expansion of Flying Start in September and have identified some gaps in provision for Early Years Education places. If you are interested in this exciting opportunity to join our excellent Framework then please make sure you are registered on Sell4Wales website to receive the notification when it goes live.

Talk With Me - Our best place is face to face

ICAN

The Speech and Language Therapy team are introducing a Talk With Me message of the month and up first is ‘Our best place is face to face’. If you are with a child, the best place to be is at their level (even if this means lying on the floor!) so you can see each other’s faces. This means you can:

  • See each other’s facial expressions
  • See what the child is interested in and give the right words to match what they can see/are doing
  • The child can watch your mouth to see how you make the sounds in words

Why not try to be face to face for 5 extra minutes a day and see how much it changes your interactions!

For more information on interacting with young children, visit https://gov.wales/talk-with-me.

Childcare and Playwork COVID-19 Advice

Coronavirus

In Wales we are now moving from pandemic to endemic and living with COVID-19 However, COVID-19 has not gone away and will remain with us globally.

For this reason, it remains important for childcare and playwork settings, and Nannies, to consider what they can do to reduce the spread of the virus, and protect their staff and the children using their services.

All settings should continue to be aware of the steps to take to reduce the risk of COVID-19.

The Childcare and Playwork COVID-19 Advice will be removed in May with settings advised to utilise the general Welsh Government Guidance and self-isolation advice  as well as the Public Health Wales’ Infection Prevention and Control Guidance for Childcare settings
