Housing Update: Preparing for Inspection
We’re currently preparing for an important inspection by the Regulator of Social Housing, who ensures social landlords are providing safe, high-quality homes and listening to tenants.
As part of this process, tenants have already taken part in interviews, shared feedback through the Housing Influence Panel, and contributed to sessions like our Digital Drop-In on fire safety. The Regulator has also reviewed key documents and observed Council meetings to understand how we’re performing and responding to tenant needs.
Looking ahead, more interviews and site visits are expected, with staff, councillors, and tenants continuing to play a vital role. We’ll keep everyone informed as we receive updates, including the inspection agenda and next steps.
Thank you to all tenants who’ve already taken part—your voice is helping shape the future of housing services.

What to do if you spot Damp and Mould in Your Home
If you spot damp or mould in your home, you need to act fast. Mould is a health hazard and needs to be treated before it causes harm to you or others in your home.
Condensation is the most common form of damp in homes. Mould growth can be caused when excess moisture in the air comes into contact with a cold surface, such as a window or wall and tends to be worse in winter.
Everyday activities like cooking, having a bath or shower and drying clothes can create moisture in your home. When doing these activities try and open a window or use the extractor fans.
See below a chart comparing costs of running extractor fans with other household goods.
You can report Damp and Mould to repairs by emailing damp&mould@broxtowe.gov.uk if possible please attach photos to the email. You can also call repairs on 0115 917 7777 option 2.

Pop Ups FAQs
Thank you to everyone who came to visit Housing at the Pop Up events throughout the Borough.
Questions we have been asked include:
 |
|
Q) Are asylum seekers or refugees entitled to Council Housing?
No, since to qualify for our Housing register you must be a British citizen and have a local connection to the area. This means having lived or worked in Broxtowe borough for a total of 3 of the past 5 years.
There are some exceptions to local connection such as fleeing domestic violence, care leavers, members of
|
the armed forces or when applying for our Independent Living accommodation (excluding bungalows). This requirement is so the Council’s housing stock benefits the local community.
Asylum seekers are placed in Home Office accommodation while their asylum claim is considered. If an individual receives refugee status, asylum seeker support is withdrawn by the government and they are removed from their temporary accommodation within 30 days.
In this case refugees could be at risk of homelessness and be involved with the Housing Options Team at Broxtowe Borough Council. But this would mean they are placed in temporary accommodation rather than prioritised for Council Housing.
For more information see Councillor Vanessa Smith explain how our Housing Allocation Policy works: Facebook video
What are the rules around bedroom need for children?
Families with children of the same sex where both children are aged under 16 can be required to share a bedroom. If the children are of the opposite sex and the older child is over 10 then they can be allocated separate bedrooms. For example if a family had a 12 year old boy and 8 year old girl they could bid for 3 bed properties.

Celebrate Older Person Day
International Older Persons Day, Wednesday 1 October, is a global opportunity to recognise the contributions of older people and promote their wellbeing, inclusion, and dignity.
At Broxtowe Borough Council, we’re proud to celebrate this day across our Independent Living schemes, where our dedicated Activities Coordinators play a vital role in enriching the lives of our residents.
Throughout the year—and especially on this day—our coordinators organise a wide range of engaging activities designed to foster connection, creativity, and wellbeing. These include:
- Lunch Clubs: Bringing residents together for a warm meal and good company.
- Reminiscence Sessions: Encouraging storytelling and memory sharing to spark joy and connection.
- Music Quizzes: Fun and interactive sessions that combine nostalgia with friendly competition.
- Craft Activities: Hands-on creative workshops that promote relaxation and self-expression.
- NHS App Talks: Supporting digital inclusion by helping residents understand and use health-related technology.
These activities not only celebrate the vibrancy and resilience of older people but also help build a strong sense of community within our schemes. On International Older Persons Day, we honour the wisdom, experiences, and contributions of our older residents—and reaffirm our commitment to supporting them in living independent, fulfilling lives.

Fund a Community Project
Did you know we have a Community Fund of up to £1000 that our Housing customers can apply for?
Tenants in Chilwell received funding for a community development course that culminated in a practical project running four daytime sessions for families in the summer holidays. We spoke to some of the tenants about their experience of the course.
Jasmine found the course very meaningful, particularly the module on conflict management and hearing from external speakers. Julie enjoyed the responsibility that came with organising, promoting and running community events.
