England legend makes surprise visit to Stapleford

Steven Gerrard at the new Hickings Lane community pavillion

England football legend Steven Gerrard has paid a flying visit to Hickings Lane to check out progress on our new community pavilion and sports facilities – which will be home to one of seven Steven Gerrard Academies in the UK.

The former Liverpool and England ace, joined by former Leeds United and Scotland captain Gary McAllister, met academy students, Stapleford Town FC officials and councillors from Broxtowe Borough Council on a guided tour of the site.

The Academy offers education and skills training for both on and off-field sports careers, including pathways into professional football. Steven said: “Having elite facilities like this is going to make a huge difference to all the girls and boys who use it. The classrooms are amazing, there are multi-use facilities – it’s the perfect platform for them to learn, grow and evolve themselves as people.”

Heat health alert issued for the East Midlands

Warning sign

An amber heat health alert will come into effect from 12pm on Friday 11 July and will be in place until 9am on Monday 14 July across the East Midlands. The amber alert has a matrix score of 12. This means significant impacts are likely across health and social care services due to the high temperatures.

Actions you can take to stay safe in hot weather:

  • Keep out of the sun at the hottest time of the day, between 11am and 3pm.
  • If you are going to do a physical activity (for example exercise or walking the dog), plan to do these during times of the day when it is cooler such as the morning or evening.
  • Keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun.
  • If you do go outside, cover up with suitable clothing such as an appropriate hat and sunglasses, seek shade and apply sun cream.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and limit your alcohol intake.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell, and if you are at higher risk, ask them to do the same for you.
  • Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and what to do if you or someone else has them.
