Remembrance Parade

The annual Remembrance Sunday commemorations are a significant event in the Borough’s calendar, which allows us all the opportunity to pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

On Sunday 10 November from 10.45am, there will be a full parade and service at the war memorial in Beeston, followed by a service at Beeston Parish Church for those who wish to join us.

Please be aware that whilst road closures will be in place, they are there to facilitate the parade and we kindly ask you not to gather on the road.

If you are attending the event as a wheelchair user, please speak to a member of our events team who will be able to guide you to our accessible viewing area.

Services and events will also be taking place at other locations across the Borough – please contact your local Town or Parish Council for details.

Look out for animals around fireworks and bonfires

As Bonfire Night approaches, it’s important to remember to protect animals during the celebrations. Here are some tips for keeping pets and wildlife safe this season.

Bonfires

Bonfires are very dangerous for hedgehogs as woodpiles are ideal places for shelter. To help protect them, make sure you:

  • Store materials for your bonfire in a safe place – then on the day you want to light it, move them to a different patch of ground.
  • Build the bonfire on the same day that you will light it. The longer it’s left for, the more likely it is that a hedgehog will wander in.
  • Always place the bonfire on open ground – never on a pile of leaves, as a hedgehog may be hiding underneath.
  • Always check the entire bonfire for hedgehogs before lighting it. They tend to hide in the base of the centre of the pile.

Fireworks

A lot of animals are scared of fireworks but there are ways that you can help to comfort them.

Advice to help dogs:

  • Walk your dog during daylight hours to avoid times when fireworks are likely to be set off.
  • Close windows and curtains to muffle the sound of fireworks. Blackout your doggy safe haven, so they can't see any flashes outside.
  • Put on some music or TV to mask the firework sounds.
  • Ignore the firework noises yourself. Play with a toy to see if your dog wants to join in, but don't force them to play.

Tips to support cats:

  • Provide hiding places in your home e.g. under furniture or a quiet corner.
  • Don't stress your cat by trying to tempt them out. Leave them until they're ready.
  • Keep them in to avoid them becoming stressed.
