Plastic Free July - be part of the solution

Reusable coffee cup amongst disposable cups

Take part in a global movement by ditching single-use plastics to help reduce plastic pollution.

Often it is very difficult to avoid single-use plastic but with a ban on a number of items being put into place this October, now is as good a time as ever to find some sustainable alternatives.

Here are some easy switches you can make and maintain:

  • Avoid plastic packaging by buying loose fruit and vegetables.
  • Use a reusable container or beeswax wrap for your packed lunch instead of cling film or foil, as these are single-use and cannot be recycled in the Borough.
  • Use reusable containers to store or freeze leftovers, this helps to reduce food waste.
  • Swap out your liquid soap for a bar or find a local zero waste shop that offers liquid soap refills.
  • Take a reusable coffee cup to your local café, you might even save some money or earn reward points to spend there.
  • Need straws for a party? Avoid plastic and buy reusable glass or metal straws.

Bug bee'n'bee

Bug hotel inside house-shaped frame

Insects are vital pollinators - without them many ecosystem services would be affected, including our crop production.

Solitary bees make up the majority of UK bee species and are extremely efficient pollinators. We can help them by providing them with a suitable space to live or rest.

What you will need:

  • A basic frame – you could upcycle a tin can, plant pot or old bird box for this.
  • Some hollow canes or drill various sized holes (2mm to 10mm) into a block of wood to create space for nesting. Point these slightly downwards so water can run out.
  • Adding other material like bark, pine cones and cardboard can attract other species too.
  • Add bee friendly plants nearby to attract your buzzy hotel guests such as lavender, honeysuckle and aster. You can also plant some spring bulbs in autumn, ready to bloom in spring.

Resident opening green lidded bin

One of the biggest causes of contamination in our green-lidded recycling bins is recycling that has been bagged.

Your recycling should be clean and dry, so it isn’t necessary to put it in a bin liner as these are not recyclable. By placing these items loose in the bin, we can ensure that high quality, valuable recyclable materials aren’t missed and are successfully recycled into new products. This uses less energy and produces less waste than making an item from scratch.

Even though the contents of the bag may be perfect for recycling, putting it in a bin liner might result in your green-lidded bin not being collected.
