Did you know? - Green Lidded Recycling Bins
Green-lidded recycling bins
The green-lidded recycling bin is collected on an alternate weekly collection with the black-lidded bin. Residents who recycle a lot of material can have the use of two green-lidded recycling bins, free of charge.
What happens to the material collected in the green-lidded bin?
After the recycling bins have been collected, the material is tipped at the Giltbrook Transfer station. From there it is bulked up and transported to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at Mansfield.
There the materials are sorted and baled and then sent on to re-processors to be used to make new products.
What can go in the recycling bin?
- Mixed paper and cardboard
- Food tins and drink cans
- Household plastic packaging
Find out more and check specific items through our Waste A-Z checker on our website or the Nottingham Recycling Checker.
What is recycling contamination?
Contamination in the green-lidded recycling bin is when materials that cannot be recycled are placed into the recycling bins. Common items contaminating the bins are:
- Drinks cartons – Tetra Pak cartons are difficult to recycle because they are a mixture of plastic and paper and there are limited facilities to process them in the UK
- Polystyrene and cellophane
- Shredded paper – in order to process such a large amount of material at our Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), we use a lot of automatic sorting equipment which recognises different types of material but not very small or shredded pieces
- Plastic carrier bags – The MRFs sort out all the different materials so you don’t need to separate them in bags. Plastic bags can actually cause problems and prevent good materials from being recycled so please make sure your recycling is loose in your collection container
- Plastic tubs/pots/trays and all soft plastics
- Aerosol cans with 'hazardous' markings including aerosols with an orange and black cross or skull & crossbones symbols
All of these items should be placed in your black bin (non-recyclable household waste).

Let’s Optimise your Heating
Did you know that turning down the flow temperature to 60°C on your condensing combi boiler can help you save up to 12% off your energy bills and reduce your carbon emissions?
A condensing combi boiler heats both your water and your central heating all from the same unit. They can be identified by 5 copper pipes coming out the bottom of the boiler.
As well as having a positive impact on the planet, you can save an average of £178 without compromising on comfort, as your house will stay just as warm.
If you live in Nottinghamshire and have a condensing combi boiler, the team from Nottingham Energy Partnership can visit your home for free to help make this change for you. Their team of specialists are on hand to explain the process and answer any questions that you may have.

Climate Change - Carbon Emissions
Did you know that there are six main greenhouse gases set out in the Kyoto protocol?
These gases are:
- Carbon Dioxide
- Methane
- Nitrous Oxide
- Hydrofluorocarbons
- Perfluorocarbons
- Sulphur Hexafluoride
These gases are converted to Carbon Dioxide Equivalent or 'CO2e' and are referred to as carbon emissions.
We have even more information on climate change available as our climate change webpages have recently been updated. There is now information and signposting on a variety of topics, including sustainable lifestyle and travel, energy saving tips and information for businesses.
Free Trees are Growing!
Following on from previous successes, we have once again run our free tree giveaway in October of last year. This popular scheme saw the Council give away 750 fruit trees, from which residents were able to choose apple, pear or plum. The trees were given away on a first come first served basis to residents who qualified by being Green Rewards members. The trees that are planted will make a really positive difference to the environment, with each tree capturing one tonne of carbon (with slight variation depending on the tree's species), over the course of its lifetime.
We're excited to see that residents have been sharing their tree planting successes on the Green Rewards platform and earning 500 points for uploading their photos, like the one above!
Green Rewards is an online platform designed to encourage Broxtowe residents to undertake sustainable actions, which in turn helps reduce their carbon footprint.
Users accumulate points for undertaking actions such as reusing and recycling and these actions are logged either via the Green Rewards app, or the web platform.
