Glass Collections

Refuse man collecting glass

Did you know that between April and December last year, Broxtowe collected nearly 1,500 tonnes of glass? That’s 6,000 glass bottles and jars!

The glass collection process

The Refuse and Recycling Team leave Kimberley Depot some time after 6.15am after undertaking their vehicle checks. This gives the team time to get to their first collection point. The glass crew, however, are not able to start any collections until after 7.00am.

The glass collection team collect from each household across the Borough once every four weeks and, on average, visit 3,000 homes every day.

Householders are provided with up to four 37L glass bags which are free of charge. Residents also have the option to purchase a red-lidded 140L bin for a one-off charge. Only glass put out in either the Broxtowe Borough Council glass bag or the red-lidded bin will be collected. Glass put out in carrier bags or plastic boxes will not be picked up due to health and safety reasons. To request additional bags or to order a bin please visit our website or email waste@broxtowe.gov.uk

Once collected, the glass is brought back to Kimberley Depot where it is bulked up. Once there is enough glass, this is picked up by the Council’s contractor and taken for processing. The glass is then recycled into more glass bottles and jars or used as aggregate for road building.

Free Trees

David Atkin getting the free trees ready

Following its previous success, we ran our free tree giveaway again in October of last year. We were able to give away even more trees than before, this time with 750 fruit trees available (Apple, Pear and Plum).

The trees were given away on a first come first serve basis to residents who qualified by signing up to Green Rewards.

The trees are now ready to be delivered and should arrive on the doorsteps of residents that were successful with their application in the next two weeks. Once residents have received their tree, they can earn extra Green Rewards points for sending in a photo of them planting the tree!

'Recycle Right' with the free MyNotts app and Recycling Checker

A banner about the MyNotts App and recycling checker

Have you used Nottinghamshire County Council's new Recycling Checker yet? It’s a quick and easy way to find out which products can go in your recycling bin at home, and it’s available on the free MyNotts app. You can download the app by searching for ‘MyNotts’ in the app store.

Making sure we recycle the correct things in the right places is really important - not only does it help the fight against climate change by helping the UK save 18 million tonnes of CO2 each year, but it also means that lorry loads of recycling are not contaminated by items that cannot be recycled in Nottinghamshire.

It can sometimes be confusing to know which bin to use for your rubbish and that is why the new Recycling Checker has been created. The Recycling Checker allows users to search thousands of items to find out if they can be recycled at home, if they need to be disposed of in another way, or if they need to be taken to one of Nottinghamshire County Council's 12 recycling centres across the county or another facility such as bottle and clothing banks.
