Applications for our free trees are now open!
For 2022, we are offering 750 free fruit trees to Broxtowe residents and we have the following varieties to give away:
This year, we will also be asking that applicants sign up to our Green Rewards platform to qualify. Once you've signed up you can complete our online application form to apply for one of our trees at www.broxtowe.gov.uk/freetrees.
Green Rewards is a free platform which can be accessed via app or desktop and whilst using it, users can accumulate points for recording sustainable actions such as reusing and recycling. These points can then be exchanged for vouchers and prizes and can also be put towards local community projects.
The Free Tree programme is part of the Council’s Green Futures and Climate Change programme and is one of many initiatives that will help tackle Climate Change.
Trees are invaluable to our planet and the regulation of the ecosystem as they store carbon and release oxygen. For every tree that is planted, during its lifetime around 1 tonne of carbon will be absorbed – that’s equal to the weight of an adult male polar bear!
If you need a little help signing up, watch our video below.

Find out more on our garden waste subscription service via our website.
Do not dispose of used batteries in your bin
Never throw batteries away with general rubbish or other recycling. Used batteries must only be recycled using specialist battery recycling services.
Used batteries thrown away with other waste and recycling are likely to be crushed or punctured once the waste is collected and processed. Some battery types in particular, like lithium-ion (Li-ion) and nickel-metal Hydride (NiMH), can ignite or even explode when they’re damaged. Once this happens, the batteries can quickly set fire to other materials present in the waste, like paper, leading to serious incidents that put lives at risk and disrupt services.
It’s not always obvious that a product contains a battery, so they can be thrown into bins by mistake. In particular, products like laptops, tablets, mobile phones, radio-controlled toys, bluetooth devices, shavers, electric toothbrushes, power tools, scooters and even e-cigarettes contain batteries that are hidden or difficult to access.
Please recycle your batteries safely using designated collection points at a recycling centre or electronics retailer, if you're unsure of how to dispose of an item check our Waste A-Z search tool.
