Stay safe and well in the hot weather

heatwave

As temperatures are expected to soar across the UK, it is important to take care of the health and wellbeing of ourselves and others in the community.

Here are some key points to keep in mind during the hot weather:

Check on others

  • Check on family, friends, elderly and vulnerable people regularly when it's hot

Stay hydrated

  • Make sure to drink plenty of fluids and take a bottle of water with you when you leave the house

Stay protected

  • Try to keep out of the sun between 11am - 3pm, as UV radiation is strongest at this time
  • When outside, wear UV sunglasses and walk in the shade if you can
  • Apply sunscreen with a protection factor of at least SPF15

Avoid intense physical activity

  • Try to avoid exercising or carrying out strenuous outdoor activities when it's hot

Keep your house cool

  • Keep windows open if possible and safe
  • Shade or cover windows exposed to direct sunlight
  • Turn off non-essential lights and electrical equipment

Be mindful when using the car

  • Ensure that babies, children, older people and pets are not left in parked cars

Seek medical help if you feel ill

  • If you feel unusual symptoms call 111, or if you or anyone else develops signs of heatstroke call 999 as this is a medical emergency

The owl has landed at Colliers Wood

totem

A log from a tree (which unfortunately had to be removed as it was causing damage) has been carved into an owl totem structure at Collier’s Wood – by salvaging it the carbon in the trunk will be stored as a piece of public art.

The log was carved by chainsaw sculptor Peter Leadbeater. The Friends of Colliers Wood are behind the inspiration for the sculpture, with the owl representing the aspiration for Colliers Wood to have owls nesting at the site.

The finishing touches will be completed as part of The Green Festival at Collier’s Wood, taking place tomorrow between 12pm and 3pm.
