The Mayor's Christmas Appeal
The Mayor of Broxtowe, Councillor Richard MacRae, has officially launched his 2021 Christmas Appeal.
The appeal aims to support local foodbanks as well as his chosen charity, Broxtowe Youth Homelessness, by encouraging people to donate items which will be passed to people most in need over the festive period.
There are many ways people can get involved with donations. Collection trolleys have been set up in the Council Offices in Beeston, and are open during office up until Thursday 16 December. There are many collection points in local communities such as selected schools and Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Eastwood.
The Mayor shared “I really want to do as much as possible to help support my chosen charity, Broxtowe Youth Homelessness and the foodbanks right across the Borough. It’s very important to help people and it’s all about bringing unity to the community.”
Broxtowe Youth Homelessness said “This appeal will help to stock our food parcel cupboard. There are lots of young people in need, especially as the cost of living has increased. A little help can go a long way. We are very grateful for all food donations.”
Donations will be shared between Broxtowe Youth Homelessness and Broxtowe foodbanks.
Beeston Switch On Their Christmas Lights This Weekend!
Beeston will be switching their Christmas lights on this Saturday 4 December, 4:30-6:30pm.
There will be a Christmas market in the square from 12.00pm, with traditional fairground rides and food on Foster Avenue car park.
Santa’s Grotto will be on Broadgate Park 2:30-5:45pm with a firework display to follow at 6:30pm.
Santa’s Grotto gifts are supported by Nottingham Beeston Tesco and Wilkinson Beeston.

Small Business Saturday
 Small Business Saturday is back tomorrow, Saturday 4 December.
Help support our Broxtowe businesses this weekend by shopping small and local.

£1m Town Centre Recovery Fund Announced for Stapleford Businesses
 Following approval back in November of the six core projects from the Stapleford Town Deal programme, the Town Deal Executive Board are pleased to announce the launch of the first project – the Town Centre Recovery Fund.
A total of £1m has been made available for the Town Centre Recovery Fund.
The fund will offer grant support to high street businesses in Stapleford Town Centre, and will be split into two grants to support different aspects of business recovery.

The Business Continuity Grant aims to support business resilience and growth over the long term, sustaining occupancy levels within Stapleford Town Centre. This grant will support existing businesses looking to expand the way they distribute their services. It is anticipated a maximum of £200,000 will be spent on this portion of the wider Town Centre.

The Building Development Fund is to create buildings of the future; improving accessibility, energy efficiency and the look and feel of Stapleford Town Centre. It is anticipated a maximum of £800,000 will be issued through this part of the fund.
Tree Planting at Cater Lane Recreation Ground
The Mayor of Broxtowe, Councillor Richard MacRae helped school children from Lanes Primary School in Chilwell create a small community orchard at Cator Lane Recreation Ground.
Broxtowe Borough Council received funding for ten new trees from the Urban Tree Fund including two apple and two pear trees. Children from the school’s Eco Team also helped plant some bulbs including daffodils, snowdrops and bluebells.
The event was also supported by Incredible Edible Beeston who have been doing some community growing on the park.
COVID-19 Updates
New COVID-19 measures in place
 Targeted measures to prevent the spread of the new COVID-19 Omicron variant came in to effect on Tuesday 30 November.
They have been introduced as a precaution while more information is gathered and assessed on the variant’s transmissibility and any possible effect on our vaccines.
The following measure are now in place:
- Face coverings are compulsory in shops and settings such as banks, post offices and hairdressers, as well as on public transport unless individuals are exempt from doing so. All hospitality settings are exempt.
- All international arrivals must take a PCR test by the end of the second day after arrival and self-isolate until they receive a negative result. The PCR tests are available online from private providers.
- All contacts of suspected Omicron cases must self-isolate, regardless of their age or vaccination status. They will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace.
All adults to be offered COVID-19 boosters by the end of January
 All eligible adults in England aged 18 and over will be offered a COVID-19 booster vaccine by the end of January.
Following advice from the independent experts at the Joint Committee for Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), everyone who is currently eligible - including those aged 40 and over, health and social care workers and those at increased risk from the virus due to health conditions - will be able to book their jab from three months after their second dose, meaning an additional 7 million people over 40 are now eligible.
The government and the NHS are urging younger people to wait until they are called forward by the NHS – with the more vulnerable continuing to be prioritised for their booster, to top up their immunity to the virus as soon as possible.
Younger age groups will be invited by the NHS in due course in order of age, grouped into 5-year age bands.
COVID-19 vaccination bus is coming to Beeston!
 Vaccines continue to remain our best line of defence, and all adults who have not yet received their first or second dose of the vaccine, or those who are eligible for their booster are encouraged to come forward to help protect themselves and others.
The COVID-19 vaccination bus will be coming to Beeston twice this month on:
- Saturday 11 December all day at Chilwell School, Queens Road West, Beeston, NG9 5AL
- Sunday 22 December in the morning at Devonshire Avenue and in the afternoon at Beeston Fields Recreation Ground
There's no need to book just turn up, thank you to all of our residents that have already had their vaccinations and boosters. Vaccines are the best way to protect yourself and others from the virus. Let's continue to keep Broxtowe safe for all residents.
Book your flu vaccine today
 The flu vaccine is a safe and effective vaccine. It's offered every year on the NHS to help protect people at risk of getting seriously ill from flu.
The best time to have the flu vaccine is in the autumn or early winter before flu starts spreading. But you can get the vaccine later.
Flu vaccination is important because:
- More people are likely to get flu this winter as fewer people will have built up natural immunity to it during the COVID-19 pandemic
- If you get flu and COVID-19 at the same time, research shows you're more likely to be seriously ill
- Getting vaccinated against flu and COVID-19 will provide protection for you and those around you for both these serious illnesses
If you've had COVID-19, it's safe to have the flu vaccine. It will still be effective at helping to prevent flu.
Support Available
Self-isolating
If you develop symptoms of COVID-19, stay at home and self-isolate immediately. If you have a positive test result but do not have symptoms, stay at home and self-isolate as soon as you receive the results.

Financial support

The impact of the pandemic on you and your loved ones and not being able to enjoy all of the activities you would normally be involved in can all have an impact on your health. It is important to remember to look after yourself. If you have symptoms or a health concern you are worried about, please contact your GP practice. GP practices are still open and here for you. When you call your practice, you may be offered a consultation online or over the phone. If they feel they need to see you in person, they will invite you in for a face to face appointment.
