 Egg-cellent Waste Disposal
It’s only a week to go until Easter and no doubt your mouths are watering just thinking about the treats in store next week. Did you know on average, children in the UK get 8.8 Easter eggs every year? In total, more than 80 million boxed Easter eggs are sold at Easter in the UK each year.
With chocolate eggs can come a lot of packaging and many residents trying to do the right thing and dispose of waste correctly have asked us for information on this. So, to help you decide how to dispose of the wrappings and boxes, we have this overview:
Foil-wrapped chocolate eggs: The foil around these eggs is non-recyclable and needs to be put in your waste bin.
Boxed chocolate eggs: The cardboard box is usually recyclable, if there are no embellishments, glitter or metallic elements to it. The plastic egg ‘holder’ is not recyclable and needs to go in the waste bin (or, ideally, reused if possible for arts and crafts projects).
Painted empty eggs: Go in the waste bin please.
Homemade chocolate eggs: Can be a fun activity, can give the family a chance to be creative and usually create very little waste. Buy an egg mould, ingredients and create then enjoy! https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/how-make-easter-egg
Hen eggs: If you swap the chocolate and instead have a hen egg-based dish to celebrate Easter, the only waste is the egg shells and packaging of any other food you include. Egg boxes are recyclable, loose veg have no packaging and cheese from a deli have very little packaging and help make a good omelette.
If you decide to ditch chocolate eggs for a totally green, waste free alternative, why not blow out and wash some eggs (which you can use the inside for cooking) and hide them around your garden for an Easter egg hunt?
 Garden Waste Subscriptions
It’s that time of year, when residents in Broxtowe can renew their garden waste subscription for the year ahead.
The charge for Garden Waste Subscription 2021/22 is as follows:
- One bin: £36
- Additional bins: £22 each
Please note this covers the period 5th April 2021 to 3rd April 2022 and that subscriptions made after 15th March 2021 can take up to 10 working days to be processed and therefore collections from 5th April 2021 cannot be guaranteed.
Recycling Centre Opening Times
With lighter evenings now here, recycling centres are extending their opening times by two hours.
From 1st March recycling centres will be open from 8am to 6pm every day of the week.
Litter Picking Potential
 Lots of residents have been in touch to ask if they can help with litter picking. In February, as the snow melted and green areas are being mowed and tidied, more litter can be seen across the Borough whilst we are all out and about.
If, like us, you want to see the end of litter by our roads, on paths and in gardens, and you want to volunteer time to help us clear this litter, contact us today.
If you contact us, you will get a litter picking pole, risk assessment and we will also send you graphics to help you promote your litter pick on social media. We also collect the bags of collected litter at the end of your pick, if you let us know the details of where and when you plan to finish.
