February Trade Waste Updates

Wheelie Bins Covered in Snow

We have all had our fair share of snow recently and our teams have been out in all weathers to try and collect as usual.

Thank you for your understanding and patience during the periods of inclement weather this year. Any missed collections we have returned to collect when possible, quickly, so that waste is taken away in good time.

Control Waste Transfer Note 2021/22

By April, you should receive your annual Control Waste Transfer Note (CWTN) for 2021/22 which needs to be signed and retuned to Broxtowe Borough Council.

Please sign and return the completed form to Kimberley Depot  Broxtowe Borough Council Eastwood Road, Kimberley, Nottingham NG16 2HX using the stamped addressed envelope which will be included with your new CWTN.

Please note this is a legal requirement.

Invoices will also be sent out by April.

Why is waste an issue?

Piles of rubbish in landfill

In 2010, businesses in England produced 32m tonnes of commercial and industrial waste. In 2018, the figure was 37.2m tonnes (source: DEFRA). About half of this increase was due to better reporting systems, but, there has been a clear increase even when taking that into consideration.

About half of the waste is recycle or recovered but all other waste must be incinerated, go to landfill or have land treatment. We want to encourage all businesses in Broxtowe to reduce their waste, so we can be a more environmentally-friendly Borough.

The popularity of our recent Go Green Challenge for residents to reduce their household waste and Clean and Green litter picking scheme, tells us our residents care about the environment.

If you are working hard to reduce waste, celebrate your efforts! If customers know you are doing your bit, they may feel even better about their purchase of your product or service, may be more likely to use you again and maybe even recommend you to others.

Tell Customers How You Reduce

According to a survey conducted by Global Data last year, four out of ten consumers in the UK now keep environmental issues in mind when buying. If you can show you have done what you can to reduce your impact on the environment, it could help your reputation and your sales in the future.

Here is how to shout about your efforts:

  • Print a message on the receipts given to customers
  • Add a message onto your paper bags
  • Put a notice in the window
  • Tell people verbally
  • Mention it on your website or on social media channels
  • Write messages and add them to the relevant areas in your business. If you have recycling bins in your business, have a notice which tells people how much waste has been recycled and what that is the equivalent of.

Green Your Business in 2021

Whilst it has been a challenging time for businesses, this last year, now could be the best time to review your business and make it more environmentally-friendly.

Some of the elements you could look at for the future could be:

  • Packaging of products bought and whether there are ways to select products with less packaging.
  • Sourcing locally where possible.
  • Reducing use of plastic in your business, to 0, if you can.
  • Introducing recycling bins for staff and/or customers to use and organise recycling collections.
  • Using fresh air by opening doors and windows in the warmer months, instead of air conditioning.
  • Checking insulation in the building, to see where heat might be escaping in the winter. Investing in good insulation could make all the difference to winter heating bills. If you keep your door closed, explain that as part of a friendly sign/poster, welcoming customers in.
  • Using paper bags and boxes for purchases instead of plastic bags.
  • Keeping windows that face the sun, clear, to let light in and reduce the need for additional lighting and heating.
  • Switch to a green energy supplier.
  • Go paperless.
  • When safe to do so, look at car sharing schemes for employees, so they can reduce their carbon footprint and vehicle fuel bills too. Try encouraging this with adaptable/flexi working where possible.
