All things bright and beautiful

Here in Broxtowe we are very proud of the parks and green spaces in our area. All our sites have remained open throughout lockdown, with the exception of the play areas, which have now reopened. All parks are proving to be very popular, especially with the sunny weather, so it is important for everyone to remember that social distancing measures are still in place.

Please be considerate when using the areas and try to find quiet areas that may be less busy. Please respect the usage information on capacity, that is on all the play areas so you can enjoy the summer safely.

Flowers at Inham Nook

Inham Nook Wildflowers

We couldn't send out a bulletin without sharing some of the photos from Inham Nook Recreation Ground, Chilwell.

Two large areas sown with annuals and wildflowers have been created as part of our commitment to the Climate Change and Green Future Programme. You can see them on the recreation ground near the tram line.

They are great for bees and pollinating insects and provide a very welcome sight for visitors to the area. Similar areas have been created in other areas of the Borough and we hope to bring you some more photos next month.

Community Football Event

Last month saw Nottingham Forest Community Trust working with Nottinghamshire Police and Local Councillor Richard MacRae, to hold a socially distanced football event at Ilkeston Road Recreation Ground, Stapleford. This event was attended by local children at four sessions throughout the day, with activities such as football tennis, football golf and fitness training. Given the success of the event it is hoped to repeat it again at other locations in the borough in the future.

Casey the Covid-19 Snake

Casey the Covid-19 Snake (made of beautifully decorated pebbles and stones)

A strange title but this is something that has caught local residents' imagination at Colliers Wood, Moorgreen. Local residents were keen to do something to occupy children and put forward a positive message during Covid-19 lockdown.

More than 400 brightly decorated stones and pebbles have been placed on the Performance Area overlooking the main pond, snaking around the area. The pebbles display messages of thanks and thoughts during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hall Om Wong Access Work

New footpath

Last month we reported that the play area at this popular site in Kimberley was almost complete. We are delighted that we can tell you work has now been finished and the play area is open once again.

The second phase of the improvement works have now also been completed and this has seen new gates installed at various access points replacing old wooden stiles, new stone surfaced footpaths, additional perimeter fencing and a traditional metal fence to enclose a copse of some of the oldest trees on the site.

This work was jointly funded by the Council and FCC Communities Foundation. The new access initiatives have been very well received.

Broxtowe from Above

Last month we asked you to identify a site in the south of Broxtowe. The clue was “Broxtowe’s newest park with rugby connections in the past”.

The answer was... Hetley Pearson Recreation Ground, Beeston off Queens Road. Congratulations if you got this right!

Aerial view on NHS flower bed

This month local drone photographer Philip Francomb has captured the NHS flower bed on the edge of Bramcote Hills Park. The full effect of the bed has been captured in the photograph you can see here. This positive news story has been picked up by the National Horticultural Press and makes us all very proud indeed.

Pride in Parks

Swiney Park Toton

The consultation undertaken for the proposed new play area at Dovecote Lane Recreation Beeston has now finished and the results are being analysed and will be used as part of a bid to FCC Communities Foundation for a new play area.

If the bid is successful, this work will take place in early 2021.

If that seems too long to wait, work will be starting soon on a new young children’s play area at Swiney Way, Toton. This will see all the old equipment and bark surface removed with new modern equipment and a rubber play surface installed. Work is expected to start next month.

Annual Parks Survey

It is that time of year, where we ask you to help us make our parks and open spaces even better. There are a number of parks included in the survey this year so if you have some ideas or feedback and have ten minutes, please complete the survey before 12th September.

Your feedback will help us make improvements in 2021 and mean we can keep our parks and open spaces, great places to enjoy time with friends and family.
