Broxtowe Honours Community Heroes with a Dedicated 'Thank You Week'
Broxtowe Borough Council is celebrating community heroes from the Borough in a specially designated ‘Thank You Week’ to recognise those who have gone above and beyond to support local people during the pandemic. The week will take place from 17th – 21st August.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE said: “We have always believed that Broxtowe is a great place to live and the pandemic has truly proved it. We have seen first-hand communities pulling together to make sure residents are cared for and not forgotten about, even our younger residents worked hard to keep people’s spirits up as they saw the creative creations of Rainbows of Hope in windows. This week will allow us to say thank you as we know that everyone has played a part in this.”
Deputy Leader of the Council, Councillor Steve Carr said: “We know that the pandemic has brought some very difficult challenges, but the residents and businesses of Broxtowe, as well as our own Council employees have really risen to the challenge and I am very proud of everyone. Thank You Week is the perfect time to highlight the many people across our communities that have gone above and beyond and I can’t wait to hear more stories.’

- Download our Thank You Broxtowe poster (.pdf) (48KB) (Opens in a New Window)and display it in your window.
- Send a shout out by emailing your story and picture to press@broxtowe.gov.uk and we'll give them a shout out across our social media channels.
- Nominate a local resident, group or business for an outstanding contribution to the community for a special personal thank you call with the Mayor of Broxtowe or to receive a Mayor's Certificate of Appreciation.

 Face Covering Changes
The guidance on face coverings was updated last week and as of 8 August members of the public will have to wear a face covering in more places, so please make sure that you are prepared this weekend by taking your face covering with you.
Here's some of the new places you will have to wear one, but please ensure you read the full government list.
- Hair salons and barbers
- Places of worship
- Libraries
- Cinemas
- Veterinary services
- Message centres
- Museums and galleries
- Indoor entertainment venues
Please also remember when out and about over the weekend to regularly wash your hands, keep your nose and mouth covered when wearing a face covering and keep your distance of preferably 2 metres away from others that aren't in your household.
Shop Local Week
 Monday 10th August marks the start of Shop Local Week, which aims to celebrate the British high street. During the week we want to encourage residents to support local small businesses across Broxtowe, as we know many of our residents already do, but they need your support now more than ever.
Can you make a trip to your favourite greengrocer, bakery or florist? Has there been a particular business that you have missed visiting during lockdown?
We'd love to hear what your favourite shop to visit in Broxtowe is, or who bakes the freshest bread, or what treats you like to buy from the shops? Tag us in your local photos by using #ShopLocalBroxtowe and we'll share them across our channels.
Four Ways to Mark VJ Day
 Saturday 15th August marks the 75th anniversary of victory over Japan. The Japanese surrender saw peace after six years of warfare. VJ Day offers Broxtowe residents the chance to reflect.
“VJ Day is a chance for us to take a moment to reflect on the magnitude of the second world war and what the declaration of peace would have meant to the people of Great Britain.” said Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE, Leader of the Council.
We have four ways for you to mark VJ Day at home.
- Dress your window with our downloadable bunting and Union Jack flags or complete a postcard and pop it in your window for others to see.
- Download our kids activity pack with lots of free templates such as newsletters and postcards
- Take part in our Broxtowe Baking Competition, send your photos in using #BROXBAKE and Councillor Janet Patrick, Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe will judge your photos and select her favourites.
- Leave a message on our online reflection book.
Open Water Swimming
 As we're in for another hot weekend, make sure you enjoy the sun safely by making sure you:
- Drinks lots of water to stay hydrated
- Keep topping up your suncream
- Avoid the sun during 11am-3pm
- Avoid excessive amounts of exercise in the heat
We know it can be very tempting to cool off by taking a swim, but please avoid swimming in any open water, this could put yourself and others in danger. If you do spot someone in trouble in the water please call 999.

A new £858k emergency fund has been set to help residents.
Local charities and community organisations that are supporting residents who are struggling to afford essentials due to COVID-19, can now apply for grants towards the cost of getting food and other essentials to those who need it the most.
