What is Economic Abuse?

Broxtowe Says no to Economic abuse

Economic abuse is when someone interferes (through control, exploitation or sabotage) with their partner’s ability to acquire, use and/or maintain economic resources. Economic resources include: money, housing, transportation, utilities such as heating or items such as food or clothing.

It reinforces or creates economic instability. In this way it limits women’s choices and ability to access safety. Lack of access to economic resources can result in women staying with an abusive partner for longer than they would like and experiencing more harm as a result.

Financial Inclusion Officer

In Housing we have a dedicated Officer to give support and guidance in all areas of finance for our tenants, leaseholders and anyone using our services. 

  • Offers support and assistance with Broxtowe Borough Council tenants with applying, challenging and appealing welfare benefits
  • Offers budgeting advice
  • Provides financial statements which can be used to set up payment plans with priority and non-priority debts
  • Will sign post if requires specialist debt management such as a debt relief order
  • Will apply for holds on debts where eligible to establish debt management plan
  • Can apply to grants for a selective amount depending on if a tenant meets the criteria
  • Will assist tenants with completing application forms such as DHP, grant application if eligible
