Waste and recycling reminder for residents
Following reports of cross-contamination in recycling containers across the county borough, we would like to remind residents what can and can’t be placed in your recycling bags:
Orange Bag
Cardboard packaging, brown paper, egg boxes, birthday cards and waxed drinks cartons also known as tetra packs can be placed in your orange sack. If you have any extra large pieces of cardboard, please place them next to your orange sack for collection.
Blue Bag
Plastic bottles like milk, drink, and shampoo bottles, food containers like yoghurt pots and margarine tubs, plastic cups, non-black food trays, punnets, empty aerosols cans, foil trays and containers, food tins and drink cans can all be recycled in your blue sack.
Please do not place black plastic, plastic bags, cling film and wrappers, hard plastics such as toys, polystyrene, gas canisters and spray paints in your blue sacks as they cannot be recycled.
White bag
The following should be placed in your white bag - paper, newspaper, magazines, telephone directories and catalogues without cardboard covers, shredded paper in small amounts, junk mail including envelopes.
Please do not place wallpaper, wrapping paper, tissues, paper towels, kitchen roll, card and brown paper in your white sack.
Brown Caddy
All food waste including cooked and uncooked food, meat, fish, bones, peelings, tea bags and pet food can be recycled. Please place into the small brown caddy which should be lined with a green bag. When bags are full, tie them up and place them in the larger brown caddy ready for collection.
Garden waste and flowers should not be placed in your brown caddy. Information on garden waste service collections is available here.
Black Caddy
Glass bottles and jars should be placed in your black caddy. We cannot accept drinking glasses, glass panes, pyrex, light bulbs, ceramics and china.
Textiles such as clothes and unpaired shoes can be placed in a bag next to your recycling for collection, please do not place any duvets, bedding or pillows.
Small batteries, mobile phones and spectacles should be placed into a small clear bag and placed next to your recycling for collection.
Broken toasters, kettles, irons, hairdryers, and other small electrical items can be recycled by placing them in a separate carrier bag at the kerbside. Larger electrical items should be taken to a community recycling centre for disposal.
Larger items such as sofas and beds can be collected through our bulky waste service. You can book a collection here. The service costs £30 for up to three items. Additional items can be collected for £6.39 each, up to a maximum of 15 items. There is no limit on how many times you can book a bulky waste collection.
