Hello Subscriber,
The new Aldi foodstore in Porthcawl was officially opened today (Thursday 13 July) and around 45 local residents have been successful in gaining employment at the store.
The store is located at Salt Lake in Porthcawl and features a unique design which includes a ‘wave’ motif and the use of distinctive wood and limestone materials to create a landmark gateway to the town. The outside areas have also been extensively landscaped and include benches and examples of local art.
The car park has over 100 spaces, which includes designated blue badge spaces as well as parent and child parking bays. There are also electric vehicle charging points located within the car park.
Cllr Neelo Farr, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Wellbeing, said: “It’s fantastic that the opening of the store is now just days away and this represents a real landmark moment for Porthcawl which will bring many benefits to both residents and the local economy.
“I’m also sure that the launch of this new store will help to increase town centre footfall as a result of passing trade and it’s really pleasing to hear that so many local people have been successful in securing employment with Aldi.
“A high quality, bespoke design was a key requirement throughout the bidding process and the building looks exactly like the artist impressions which is testament to the work of all involved.”
Please visit our website for more information about the new Aldi store.

Last chance to have your say: Dog control public spaces protection orders
A consultation on plans to tackle dog fouling issues and irresponsible dog ownership in the county borough is set to close on 18 July so be sure to share your thoughts with us before the deadline.
A previous dog control Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), which contained the same conditions, started in 2018 and ran through to last year. By law, the council must carry out a public consultation before it can make, extend or vary a PSPO.
Under the proposed renewal of the dog control PSPO, dog walkers could be fined £100 if they fail to pick up after their pets in public areas or walk their dog without carrying a supply of dog waste bags.
While the order does not restrict dogs from being off the lead in specific areas, it would require dog walkers to place their dog on a lead if requested to do so by an officer, making it an offence if they do not, which could also result in a £100 fine.
To take part in the consultation please visit the council website.

The launch of free period subscriptions for all young people in the area
We are launching a period dignity initiative to provide free period subscriptions to young people in the area who need them.
The free period subscription programme aims to address the issue of period poverty, ensuring that individuals facing financial hardships have access to essential menstrual products, and removing any barriers to accessing education.
Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Wellbeing, Cllr Neelo Farr said: “Bridgend County Borough Council is committed to supporting young people in their community.
“Our partnership with Grace & Green, a leading provider of eco-friendly period products, means that residents under 25 in the county borough can directly receive products to their home or pick up at a collection point, ensuring individuals can manage their periods with dignity and confidence.
“This initiative aims to make buying these items less expensive while also supporting young people in maintaining their health, safety, and ability to engage in daily life.”
The scheme is now live and anyone under 25 with a Bridgend postcode is eligible. For more information about the free period subscriptions program or to learn how to contribute, please visit our website.

Local active travel plans are boosted by Welsh Government funding
We are set to receive £1.5m to facilitate new and improved active travel routes across the county borough.
Improvements will include building new active travel routes, consultation work for future scheme developments, as well as promotion work.
The investment aims to encourage people to make more sustainable choices of travel for short journeys, such as walking or cycling.
Cllr John Spanswick, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “We welcome this further funding of £1.5m, so that we can continue to invest in active travel routes across the county borough.
“The largest allocation is being directed at a new active travel route between Ynysawdre and Bryncethin – encouraging people to make more physically active journeys, which will not only have a positive impact on the mental and physical health of residents, but also on the environment.
