Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd Headteacher scoops prestigious award
Llongyfarchiadau/Congratulations to Meurig Jones, Headteacher at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd, for scooping the coveted title of ‘Headteacher of the Year’, at the prestigious Professional Teaching Awards Cymru ceremony.
The event showcases excellence in teaching in Wales, while celebrating the contributions of staff that go the extra mile right across the country.
“As a boy from the Valleys and a passionate Welsh speaker, I’m truly humbled and honoured to have received this award,” said Meurig, who was appointed Headteacher at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd in 2016.
“I take every opportunity to promote the Welsh language, its culture and history here in Bridgend County Borough and I look forward to continuing my work in seeing the area grow its Welsh-medium provision in the near future.”
The contributions of Gill Sullivan, from Maesteg Comprehensive School, have also been recognised at the awards, with her named runner-up in the ‘Supporting Teaching and Learning Category.’
Gill has worked at the school for over 12 years, with unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of pupils, particularly through recent challenging times. During the first lockdown, Gill made over 2,000 phone calls to the most vulnerable children to ensure their safety and support their wellbeing.
We are extremely privileged to have two beacons of good educational practice within the county borough.
Staff car parking scheme returns
Arrangements are underway for the staff car parking scheme to be reintroduced. At the Civic Offices, as of 18 July, the basement car parking barrier is being brought back into use, and individual spaces have been allocated to elected members and Corporate Management Board.
Unless you have been specifically advised otherwise, all staff must now use alternative town centre car parks such as Tondu Road, Tremains Road and the bowls hall and leisure pool at Bridgend Life Centre. You will also need to display a valid car pass in your vehicle – this is currently free to obtain, but please note that this may change in future. For full details on how to obtain a car pass, visit the staff intranet site.
The Rhiw multi-storey is currently free for up to three hours, which should be adequate for most staff who need to visit the office e.g. to attend a meeting.
The situation is being closely monitored and if necessary, additional land at Brackla Street may also be temporarily brought into use as part of the parking scheme.
Further details of the new flexi scheme to be implemented from 18 July
As mentioned previously, a new staff flexi scheme is due to be implemented from 18 July. The guidance relating to the new scheme is now available on the intranet.
The guidance covers the use of the electronic time recording system, including what staff need to input on 18 July 2022, as well as the arrangements in place for dealing with previous, unauthorised flexi periods.
You can find a copy of the new flexi scheme and guidance on the staff intranet

A lack of quality sleep can affect us on many levels, including our performance, mood and relationships.
The amount of sleep needed varies between individuals, but a healthy adult usually sleeps between seven and nine hours.
However, people can experience sleeping problems at various times in life and for a range of reasons, which can be related to physical or mental health issues.
Here are some tips to help you sleep better.
Try to keep a diary of the conditions or routines that promote or hinder sleep, to discover what works best for you.
If you continue to experience sleeping difficulties, contact your GP to seek further advice.
