Essex Registration Service
Following guidance issued by the General Register Office (GRO), the body which oversee the national service, the Essex Registration Service (ERS) has now resumed services. Couples that have booked Civil Ceremonies or Civil Partnerships will now be able to have these officiated by Essex Registrars if the venue hosting is able to safely accommodate the booking.
Those ceremonies taking place at ‘community venues’, such as a Town Hall, or at an ‘approved venue’, such as a hotel, may take place with up to 30 in attendance; this number includes the couple, two registrars, two witnesses and other staff such as a photographer, however please remember to check with the venue for when ceremonies will resume.
ERS would strongly recommend that all couples contact their chosen venue to discuss requirements and how social distancing guidelines can be followed during the ceremony, and for any separate reception planned.
ERS is currently contacting couples who have ceremonies booked between 4 July and 31 October 2020 in priority order, to discuss ceremony arrangements and to make arrangements to give notice. Although not yet taking new ceremony bookings, ERS has already rescheduled approximately 1,500 bookings for couples who had to postpone their ceremonies during the national lockdown restrictions. ERS are working closely with venues and increasing their provision, and hope to be able to welcome new bookings again in the near future.
ERS is also recommencing statutory ceremonies of marriage and civil partnership, which are both held in the Essex Register Office room in Chelmsford; the first of these existing bookings will take place on 6 July 2020. Statutory Ceremonies will have a maximum attendance of 7, to allow for social distancing; again, this number includes the couple, two registrars and two witnesses. The Essex Register Office room is currently only available on Mondays, but ERS will shortly be increasing booking availability to allow ceremonies on other days of the week.
King George’s Playing Fields And River Road Renovated Play Areas
The two major refurbishment schemes were delayed due to the Covid-19 lockdown but are now finished and ready to open on Saturday 11 July.
King George’s £150,000 scheme for the toddler and younger years area features new inclusive equipment, slides, swings, roundabout, trampoline, multi-use see-saw, springers, a new sensory path, Tic, Tac Toe, and Talk Tubes. The much loved 140-year-old weeping beech tree is safely protected.
River Road Play Park has also undergone a £150,000 renovation with slides, climbing frames and sensory equipment installed, together with a new user-friendly landscaping that will enhance the experience for those with additional needs.
The Council has worked with playground equipment manufacturer HAGS to ensure that the investment on the two sites provides a broad range of imaginative and inclusive play opportunities for children including those with physical or sensory impairments. Short Breaks, who have provided expertise on design and equipment to ensure that the play areas are accessible where possible for those with physical and sensory impairments, have also been involved.

South Essex 2050
Over the past few years, the Association of South Essex Local Authorities (ASELA) has sought to understand your views about what it’s like to live or work in your local area and what you hope to achieve in the future. These consultations are vital in shaping local services, but ASELA wants to start a different kind of conversation too: about the long-term future for the South Essex region in 2050.
We want to explore how South Essex could change over the next 30 years. What we might be able to achieve together. How we can focus our efforts and direct investment towards the things that matter most.
That’s why the YourSaySE2050 website has launched. Over the next three months the group will be posing a number of important questions and using a variety of tools to capture your thoughts. Why not join the conversation today, by sharing your story, completing the survey or by posting your thoughts about the future we might dream of for the region on our Ideas Board.
Please note, the survey ends on 31 July 2020.
