Spotlight on: Healthy Homes
Colder weather will be with us soon, find out how to make your home warmer and more energy efficient.
14-20 Sept is Gas Safety Week
The theme this year is ‘Take No Chances’, a simple but important reminder that when it comes to gas safety, risks should never be ignored. Follow these top tips to stay safe at home:
- Check both sides of your engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card.
- Have all your gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year.
- Know the six signs of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness.
- Check gas appliances for warning signs that they are not working properly - lazy yellow flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks or stains on or around the appliance, and too much condensation in the room.
- Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm.
- Keep vents and chimneys clear.
- Use gas appliances only for their intended purpose.
- If you smell gas ring the National Gas Emergency Service on: 0800 111 999

Your Health
It’s Time for a Heart-to-Heart
Thousands of women across Bradford district are living with, or at risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), a group of conditions that affect the heart and circulation.
CVD often develops without obvious symptoms, and high blood pressure can go unnoticed for years. People with type 2 diabetes are also at greater risk, so it's important to attend annual reviews and take medication as prescribed.
The good news is that small lifestyle changes can help protect your heart. Being more active, eating a balanced diet, cutting back on alcohol, stopping smoking and attending regular health checks can all make a difference.
If you're aged 40 or over, you may be eligible for a free blood pressure check at your local pharmacy and a FREE NHS health check through your GP.
If you've already been diagnosed with CVD, modern treatments and medicines are helping people live longer, healthier and more active lives.
Every small step counts. Your health matters, and your heart is worth looking after.
Let's Quit Smoking Together This Stoptober!
This Stoptober could be the time you quit smoking for good. If you stay smoke-free for 28 days, you're five times more likely to quit permanently.
The good news? You don't have to do it alone.
Living Well's Stop Smoking Service offers free expert support, including:
- Free 12-week vaping kit
- Nicotine replacement therapy (patches, gum and lozenges)
- Stop smoking medications: Varenicline (Champix), Cytisinicline, Bupropion (Zyban) (subject to assessment)
- One-to-one support from a stop smoking advisor
- Free stop smoking app
Quitting smoking can mean more money, better health, more energy and greater freedom from cigarettes.
Don't wait until October. Get your quit plan in place today.

Manage Your Money to Manage Your Mental Health
Poor mental health and money worries can become a vicious cycle. When you’re struggling with your mental health, you may find it more difficult to earn and manage money. And equally, worrying about money can have a negative impact on your mental health.
Addiction and debt can easily become a vicious circle. You need money to feed an addiction. This can make debt problems worse. And being in debt can feel overwhelming and make it more tempting to turn to alcohol, drugs or gambling as a form of escape.
If you’re struggling with mental health because of money worries, debt, gambling and addition, it’s important to get help with these problems. It may be hard to tackle one without taking steps to deal with the other.
