Spotlight on: Quitting Smoking
Quitting smoking is hard, we get it. But it really is the single best thing you can do to improve your health and wellbeing (and finances!).
You don't have to do it alone, our FREE service will be with you every step of the way until you are totally smokefree.
Stop Smoking Medications – Now Available!
The Living Well Stop Smoking Service can now offer stop smoking medications for people in Bradford district who want to quit.
After an assessment with a Stop Smoking Advisor, people who are eligible can now get a range of clinically approved medications to help them quit for good.
Available Medications
- Varenicline (Champix)
- Cytisinicline
-
Bupropion (Zyban) (subject to suitability following assessment)
Stop smoking medicines are highly effective at helping people to quit smoking by reducing cravings, managing withdrawal symptoms, and blocking the pleasurable effects of nicotine.
By combining medication with 1:1 support, we can offer smokers the best possible chance of quitting for good, helping them to live longer, healthier lives.
Please note the service is free but charges may apply if you usually pay for your prescriptions.
Kenneth proves it’s never too late to quit smoking!
Kenneth was just 18 when he picked up his first cigarette in 1989, not long after losing his father to lung cancer. Like many young smokers, he believed he could quit whenever he chose. But “just for now” quickly became a habit that lasted nearly four decades.
It wasn’t until last year, after the death of a close friend from the same disease, that reality hit. Seeing history repeat itself became the wake-up call Kenneth couldn’t ignore. This time, he was ready to stop.
With support from the Living Well Stop Smoking Service, Kenneth began his quit journey with guidance from a dedicated advisor. One key moment made all the difference: setting a firm quit date. “Once I did that,” he says, “I felt determined to see it through.”
Since quitting, the benefits have been life changing. Kenneth reports better circulation, healthier gums and an overall sense of improved wellbeing, changes he’s still noticing every day.
His story is proof that it’s never too late to quit. With the right support, a clear plan and determination, a smoke-free life is within reach.
The Living Well Stop Smoking Service offers free, personalised support to help you quit with expert advice, tailored plans and access to prescribed medications.

Your Health
Alcohol Awareness Week: 6-12 July. Does Your Weekend Start During The Week?
Is it time to rethink your drinking habits?
Reaching for alcohol too often can increase blood pressure and, over time, damage our heart and other organs. While it may feel like a good way to relax or unwind, especially at weekends or in the evenings, the effects are often short‑lived.
Regular drinking can also disrupt our sleep and impact our mental health, leading to feelings like anxiety, low mood, or irritability. Over time, this can start to affect the things that matter most in life.
The good news? Change is possible.
If you live in Bradford district, you can get FREE support from DrinkCoach.
DrinkCoach offers free flexible online coaching that fits around your life and helps you take positive steps towards feeling healthier and more in control.
You can also assess your drinking by taking a 2 min test.
Men’s Health Week: 15-21 June
This Men’s Health Week, take a moment to check in on your health, or encourage the men around you to do the same.
1. Heart Health
Cardiovascular disease is a leading risk for men. A quick, free blood pressure check at your local pharmacy can make all the difference. If you’re over 40, don’t miss your free NHS Health Check.
2. Move More
Just 20 minutes of movement a day can boost your heart and mental wellbeing. Whether it’s a walk, getting outdoors or joining a local exercise referral programme like BEEP - small steps count.
3. Mental Health Matters
Many men struggle to talk about how they feel, but opening up can really help. Speak to someone you trust, check in with a mate, or reach out for support if things feel overwhelming.
Anyone can feel low, alone and even suicidal. Check-in with your mates, and give them the support they need. Remember, you don't need to have all the answers to help your mate. If you or a mate need help urgently, please click here.

BDCU Back to School Loan: Limited Time Offer!
With the new school year on the horizon, Bradford District Credit Union (BDCU) has launched a Back to School Loan aimed at helping families who may struggle with the upfront costs of uniforms, clothing and equipment.
The loan is aimed specifically at people with low credit scores, offering a practical way to manage expenses while also building better financial foundations for the future. BDCU sees it as more than just a loan: it’s a stepping stone towards improving finances, building a credit profile and developing a healthy savings habit.
The package combines a £250 loan with a £50 savings incentive, which is paid in two stages. When the loan is issued, £10 is credited directly into your BDCU savings account. Then when the loan has been fully repaid, a further £40 is added, rewarding you for seeing it through.
The offer is open to both new and existing BDCU members, though anyone who has previously held a Back to School Loan with BDCU will need to have repaid it in full before applying. This is a limited-time offer, so please don’t leave it too late.
