Keeping safe on the road this summer

The summer months can pose extra risks on the road, especially for more vulnerable road users for a number of reasons:

  • Increase in traffic: Road trips and holiday travel can lead to more congestion on the road, which increases the risk of crashes. Allow extra time and plan your route in advance so that you're not travelling at peak times.
  • School holidays: With the schools closed and the better weather, more children are likely to be playing outside. Drivers - remember to reduce your speed when driving near parks, playgrounds and in residential areas – 20 is plenty!
  • Weather conditions: Higher temperatures can affect both road conditions, vehicle performance, and may also lead to fatigued drivers. The rise in temperature can impact your tyre pressure. Get into the habit of checking your tyres regularly to make sure each one is inflated correctly - especially before you embark on a long journey TyreSafe
  • More pedestrians and cyclists on the roads: The warmer weather means an increase in the number of pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and joggers on our roads. Drivers are reminded to be especially vigilant and look out for these vulnerable road users. According to the updated Highway Code, drivers must leave at least 1.5 meters of space when overtaking cyclists.
  • Allergies and hay fever: Sneezing, a runny nose and itchy, watery eyes can significantly affect a driver. Wearing sunglasses, driving with the windows up, pollen filters fitted in the car and a good air conditioning system can all help with hay fever symptoms. You can also take antihistamines, but make sure to use a non-drowsy version.

Car Seat Checks

Nothing is more important to a parent or carer than the safety of their children.

But did you know, two thirds of child seats are fitted incorrectly? Bradford Council has teamed up with Good Egg Safety to organise a number of car seat checking events.

Trained staff will assess the installation and overall safety of the seats as well as offer guidance and adjustments where needed, in a supportive and family-friendly environment. No appointment is necessary.

The events booked for Bradford are listed below. For a full list of all car seat checking events planned in West Yorkshire this year click here
