Walking Works Programme

Benefits of Walking

Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, has partnered with West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) to embed the culture of walking into workplaces through the Walking Works programme.

Workplaces across West Yorkshire are taking steps to become more active, more productive, healthier, and happier – join them at no cost to your organisation! Spaces are limited and will be offered on a first come, first served basis.

What is Walking Works?

  • A bespoke package of staff challenges, tailored to the needs of your workplace with onsite pop-up activities to support staff engagement
  • CPD Accredited Walk Champion Training and supporting resources
  • A small number of workplaces will be offered more in-depth support to tackle barriers to walking which could include route audits and walking maps to help remove barriers to walking

What are the key benefits to you?

We have years of experience supporting workplaces, organisations taking part have seen improved staff performance, reduced employee absence, increased job satisfaction and employees prioritise their physical and mental health.

Skills for Business: Trailblazer Employer Incentives Consultation

Don’t miss your opportunity to input into potential employer incentives across West Yorkshire!

In West Yorkshire, over 100,000 working-age individuals are economically inactive due to long-term sickness however, only 30% of SMEs offer occupational health support, and many employers lack the knowledge, confidence, and capacity to support employees with fluctuating or long-term health conditions.

As part of a wider up to £38m investment in the region’s Work, Health & Skills System, West Yorkshire was identified as one of eight ‘Economic Inactivity Trailblazer’ areas. The Economic Inactivity Trailblazer has an ambition to scale up existing good practice and support employers to develop and implement new and innovative approaches to addressing economic inactivity and health inequalities.

WYCA are proposing 5 interventions each with 4 potential options and would like your feedback as local businesses on these interventions for employers:

  • Create a central resource hub to improve signposting. This could be through an online Toolkit or portal
  • Offer bite-sized training sessions for employers on inclusive recruitment
  • Develop peer support groups to share best practice
  • Increase collaboration between businesses, social enterprises, and local initiatives and share this information in working groups, promote with partners and the Fair Work Charter.
  • Offer financial incentives to enable employers to improve their inclusive recruitment and retention practices.
