On average, around one person a week dies on the roads of West Yorkshire and thousands of people are also injured each year. Behind those figures are families, friends and local communities who will be deeply affected.
In 2024 a plan to eradicate all road deaths and serious injuries across West Yorkshire by 2040 was officially launched. The plan - known as the The Vision Zero Strategy- is an innovative approach in how road safety will be improved and lives saved and focuses on a safe system approach – safe roads, behaviours, speeds, vehicles and effective post collision response.
Alongside the strategy, a Vision Zero pledge was also launched. The pledge asks members of the public and organisations to sign and make a commitment to improve road safety, acknowledging that everyone has a role to play and even seemingly small actions and commitments can make a big difference to safety on our roads.
This could be something like driving at safe speeds, always wearing a seatbelt, making sure children are using the right child seat, parking considerately or not stopping on School Keep Clear markings. Pledges can also be placed in someone’s memory.
We all have a role in improving road safety, and together we can bring about change. Everyone has a responsibility to keep people safe on our roads, and we must all work together to create lasting change.
