Working with takeaways to create a healthier future

Image of a takeaway with the Living Well Logo in the bottom right corner

Ordering takeaway food is a popular choice for lots of us. It’s sometimes quicker, easier and can even be cheaper than cooking from scratch at home, but it’s far from the healthiest option.

With over 60%* of people living in Bradford district classed as being overweight or living with obesity, the Living Well Healthy Takeaways project runs in partnership with Keighley Healthy Living and Participate to support local takeaway businesses to:

  • make it easier for customers to make healthier choices
  • make small changes to current dishes to make them healthier without affecting the cost or taste of the dish
  • understand how small changes in their businesses can have an impact on the health of people in Bradford district

(*Figures taken from KHL's consumer research report 2024).

Get vaccinated: Get winter strong!

Get Strong - Get Winter Vaccinated

Flu and COVID-19 spread more easily in winter when we spend more time together indoors and they can cause serious illness.

If you are vaccinated and catch flu or COVID-19 this winter, you are likely to have milder symptoms and recover faster, cutting your risk of being hospitalised.

It’s important to top up your protection, even if you have had a vaccine or been ill with flu or COVID-19 before, as your immunity fades over time and these viruses change each year.

You can get the NHS flu and COVID-19 vaccines if you:

  • are aged 65 or over (including those who will be 65 by 31 March 2025)
  • have certain health conditions
  • are pregnant
  • are a frontline health or social care worker
  • live in a care home for older adults

Cholesterol Awareness Month

Image of a dial showing high cholesterol as a cartoon

Cholesterol: Why It matters and keeping it in check.

Cholesterol is a fatty substance that’s present in your blood. You need some cholesterol to build healthy cells but if levels become too high it can threaten your heart by blocking blood vessels, increasing your risk of stroke and heart attack.

High levels of cholesterol can be caused by being overweight, eating foods that are unhealthy for your body, not having enough exercise, smoking and drinking alcohol. It can also be hereditary, meaning that it runs in the family.

You won’t know if your cholesterol level is too high unless you have a blood test - speak to your GP about this, especially if you are aged over 50.

There are simple lifestyle changes you can make today to reduce your risk of developing high cholesterol:

Menopause Awareness Month

Pink background with symbol for women (circle with cross attached underneath) and flowers/leaves in the background

33 million women in the UK will, at some stage in their life, experience menopause.

Some women have a smooth, relatively symptom-free transition into their menopause whereas others may suffer from a range of symptoms that can massively impact their daily lives, including their work, home and social lives.

It’s important for women (and their friends and family members who support them), to recognise the symptoms and to be aware of support and advice that’s available. It’s also important for women to know that, when the time comes, they are NOT ALONE in their experience.

Is your child up to date with their vaccinations?

Image of children with text: If we're not vaccinated we're not protected

Childhood infections like measles and whooping cough are rising, with outbreaks across the country.

Infections like these can have a huge impact on your child’s life. They can miss out on school due to being unwell, be hospitalised, and even experience life-long complications and disability.

If your child isn’t vaccinated, they’re not protected.

It’s important for parents to take up the offer of the NHS free childhood immunisation programme when offered. However, if you, or your child, have missed a vaccine, it’s never too late to check if you can catch up. Check your child’s Red Book to see if they have missed any vaccines or check with your GP.
