Know Your Numbers Week 2 - 8 September

Know Your Numbers Week

With the everyday pressures of life, we know that understanding why it’s important to know your blood pressure numbers and taking the time to get them measured isn’t always a priority. However, did you know that getting a blood pressure check is the first step to preventing heart attacks and strokes?

High blood pressure is a major cause of people becoming unwell but often it has no symptoms until it’s too late, which is why it’s known as ‘the silent killer’. Knowing your numbers means you can start making healthy lifestyle changes, or start taking medicines if you need them, to bring your blood pressure down to a healthy level. So, the power is in your hands to check your blood pressure to see if it’s under control. If you are 40 or over find your nearest Pharmacy here If you take your own blood pressure you can find out what the results mean here

Your blood pressure is very important no matter your age but it even more important to check regularly if you are age 40 or over or have a higher risk of high blood pressure. High blood pressure is not simply a part of growing old. You can take steps to know your numbers and lower them if it’s high no matter how old you are. So why not power up and make a start today?

Share your views on eye care with NHS England

Photo of woman having an eye test

The NHS would like to hear from as many people as possible who have used NHS eye care services recently.

Healthy vision is something many of us take for granted – until there's a problem. It’s important to check your eyesight regularly and, if there is a problem, be able to access the support you need.

With over 600,000 people waiting for specialist NHS eye care, getting the care you need isn’t always simple.  Please take a few minutes to share your feedback. Every response will help to shape eye care services and improve people’s care.

Are you a current or ex-smoker that can help with a research study?

Bradford has consistently ranked as poor with a high rate of smokers in the Yorkshire and Humber region. In 2022, 15.6% of adults in Bradford smoked making it the 4th highest in the region. The effects of smoking on deprived communities and minority ethnic groups are catastrophic, so it’s really important to understand what prevents smokers from using Stop Smoking Services.

The uptake of stop smoking services in South Asian communities is currently low, so the Public Health team would like to know if there are barriers they face when accessing these services.

A Bradford University masters student is carrying out research which aims to improve access, health outcomes and minimise disparity. They would like to recruit people (current or ex-smokers) for this study from South Asian backgrounds who would be willing to help.

If you or anyone you know would like to find out more or take part in this study, please click the button below to send an email. The closing date is 20 August.

Check-in with Pride

Check in with pride logo

Good mental health is an ongoing journey for many, but for LGBTQ+ people it can be more challenging.

This Pride season we want to encourage everyone to Check-in with Pride. So, we’re pledging to start more conversations about mental health, and support the Check-in with Pride Campaign.

We can all do more to break down the stigma around talking about mental health, starting with the people around us. You can ask: How are you feeling? Is there anything you would like to talk about? (Learn about having mental health conversations from Mind).

Check-in with Pride aims to make a more inclusive and compassionate environment, and better support our LGBTQ+ friends, family, work mates, neighbours and chosen families.

Together we can normalise conversations about mental health, and in doing so support more people who are struggling.

A new YouGov survey shows that LGBT+ Britons are more likely to suffer with mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Over the last 12 months, half of LGBT+ Britons (51%) say they experienced or were diagnosed with a mental health condition, compared to a third of the general population (32%).Source

Health Visiting and School Nursing Survey

Photograph of someone completing a survey on a laptop

The Public Health team are in the process of updating the 0-19 service specification and would really like to hear from parents/carers to help develop the health visiting and school nursing service.

These services are for children, young people and their families in Bradford district. The team want to find out what families would like from this service over the coming years so that they can focus their efforts on areas that will have the most significant impact. The views of parents, carers, children and young people will be key in driving development and helping the service to make informed decisions. The survey aims to capture experiences, opinions, and suggestions to make sure that services meet the needs of children, young people, and their families.

Following the survey, we will hold a consultation workshop in mid-sept. This workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss the survey findings and what happened as a result of the consultation. The survey closes on Monday, 2 September

20 Minute Movement A to Z

We would like to encourage anyone who currently isn’t active, or who maybe finds it hard to do the recommended amount of activity each day, to try using our new A-Z to help them move more and feel the benefits to their physical and mental wellbeing.

There are lots of ideas to help get you started! Ask your friends and family to try them with you and see how many you can check off the list!

Doing just 20 minutes of movement each day can help you to complete the recommended 150 minutes of physical activity per week for adults.

Children and young people aged 5 to 18 should aim for an average of at least 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous intensity physical activity every day across the week. So children could do 3 sessions of 20 minutes each day.
