Free child car seat safety checks
Good Egg Safety in partnership with Bradford Council, are offering FREE child car seat checking events in Bradford district.
Two thirds of the child seats they check across the UK are fitted incorrectly. Unfortunately, errors on seats are very easily made, but the great news is that they tend to be easy to fix.
It only takes 5 mins to have your child's car seat checked by trained safety advisors who can help you make sure your child is safely strapped in giving you total peace of mind.

Float to Live
Summer is here and lots of us may be planning holidays or days out where you might take a dip to cool off.
You may only be planning to paddle, but sometimes there are powerful rip currents (in the sea) or fast flow under the water (in rivers) that could drag you into deeper water, so it’s worth knowing what to do if you ever find yourself in difficulty.
Lakes, rivers and the sea can be very, VERY cold - even on a scorching hot day and you could risk experiencing cold shock. In cold water, your muscles can become numb and the temperature could take your breath away, making it more difficult to breathe and move.
If you do end up in the water and get into trouble, remember: Float to Live
Follow these five simple steps – it could save your life.
- Tilt your head back, submerging your ears.
- Relax and try to control your breathing.
- Move your hands to help you stay afloat.
- Your legs may sink but that’s OK – everyone floats differently.
- Spread your arms and legs to improve your stability.

July is National Picnic Month!
Celebrate by getting your family and friends together at your favourite nearby park, greenspace or your own garden and bring some delicious food to enjoy together!
Please don’t use disposable barbecues away from your home, as these can start wildfires and are also dangerous if left unattended for wildlife. Also make sure you take all your rubbish home or dispose of it in a bin.

Parks & greenspaces - Bradford District Park
Pocket Parks
These are small areas of public green space where people can relax, socialise, play and exercise, usually within a residential area, so they are part of the local community. Find out how to turn your street into a Play Street!
|
|
Play Streets are completely free and anyone in Bradford can apply. |
A Play Street is a road that is closed (for up to 3 hours) to create a traffic free space for children to enjoy themselves outdoors, even if they can’t get to a park or playground. It also lets neighbours connect and get to know each other and creates a real sense of community spirit.
Quiet residential streets, side roads and cul-de-sacs are best – main roads or bus routes are not suitable.
Applying for a Play Street is easy:
- Visit the Play Streets webpage or contact rc@bradford.gov.uk
- Talk to your neighbours about the idea.
- Set a date and fill in an application form (found on the web page).
- Play Out and have fun!

Focus on: Healthy summer foods
The warmer months of summer are a great time to get outdoors, have a picnic in the park or a barbecue at home with your family and friends.
Read on to find out how you can enjoy delicious foods that are also healthy too!
Make a basic salad of lettuce, cucumber, onion and tomato far more interesting (and yummy) by adding a range of vegetables, fruits, protein sources and wholegrain options - some of which you may not have considered!
Instead of dressings that are often high in salt, calories and fat content, try a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime with ground black pepper.
For a tasty change to burgers try making your own kebabs! Flavour chicken, fish, halloumi or tofu with your favourite herbs and spices. Squeeze lemon or lime over and leave to marinate in the fridge for a couple of hours.
Soak wooden skewers in water for at least 30mins so they don’t burn, then thread the meat, fish, tofu or halloumi onto the skewers with a chunk of vegetable between each piece. Try peppers, courgettes, onion or even pineapple!
It's easy to make a dip to go with your kebabs too. Mix plain or Greek yogurt with finely chopped fresh herbs like parsley or coriander and black pepper. You can also season it with other herbs and spices like cumin and chilli powder, whatever you prefer.
Cut into meat to check it’s cooked through before serving, when you pierce the thickest part of the meat with a fork or skewer the juices should run clear and chicken should not be pink inside. If you have a meat thermometer you can check it’s fully cooked when the temperature reaches 75ºC.
Always wash your hands and work tops thoroughly when preparing meat and fish. Make sure all food is covered before and after serving and put leftovers in the fridge as soon as possible.
You can also make barbecue fruit kebabs for a delicious dessert, try pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, grapes, and even bananas!
Although sliced bread is a popular choice for a picnic, you could try wholemeal wraps, chapatis, pitta bread, bagels or even iceberg lettuce leaves instead and add your favourite fillings.
Chop vegetables like cucumber slices, carrot sticks, pepper strips, baby sweetcorn, radishes and celery sticks and eat them with a homemade dip (recipe in the barbecue section above) or make a simple raita with fresh yogurt, cucumber, mint and green chillies.
Make wholemeal pasta, rice or cous cous and cool in the fridge then add chopped vegetables, herbs and spices to make a change from sandwiches.
Try making your own potato salad or even a crustless quiche! Find lots of inspiring healthy recipes on our website here.
Ready-made pots of jelly can be expensive to buy and it’s really easy to make jelly for a lot less money at home. All you need are some small reusable pots. Buy some ‘real fruit juice’ jelly cubes or sugar free jelly sachets or cubes and follow the instructions adding boiling water to prepare. Try adding frozen or tinned fruit to the jelly before it sets.
To make a fruity crunchy dessert, crush some plain or ginger biscuits biscuits in a plastic bag with a rolling pin or large spoon. Chop some fresh or tinned fruit (in fruit juice) and layer the biscuit crumb and fruit with natural yogurt. To sweeten you could drizzle a little honey on top.
