This jam-packed issue has lots of useful info for gardeners, sports clubs and anyone wanting to be more active. June is also full of awareness days and community events. There’s so much info in this month, grab a cuppa and read on to find out how you can join in!

Grow Bradford want to help people learn about growing their own food in biodiversity and wildlife friendly ways. There's lots of great info on their website.

Recently they visited groups who received a Living Well community food growing grant and they're building a map of Bradford food growing groups. Groups can add their activity to the map or request a site visit from Grow Bradford.

26 awards were presented in a night that showcased incredible talent and hard work within our community. There were over 600 nominations with 55 finalists selected, each representing the best of Bradford’s sporting spirit.

New Movement Fund from Sport England
Sport England have launched their new Movement Fund to help organisations and sports clubs, who help people to take part in physical activity, to apply for money.
Improving osteoporosis care for older women
Researchers at Bradford Royal Infirmary want to understand what could improve osteoporosis care for these women. They would like to talk to women who are 70 years or older, who have a diagnosis of osteoporosis and have been seen by their GP.

Whether it's understanding the importance of regular exercise, learning about healthy eating habits, or recognizing the signs of mental health struggles, knowledge helps us to take control of our health journey.
It's not just about individual health, our choices also influence those around us. Making our wellbeing a priority sets an example for our families, friends, and communities.
It's time for men everywhere to check in with themselves.
Men aren't always the best at this and it takes a little effort, BUT, the evidence says that it can come with great rewards! Push yourself (or the men in your life) to take the 5 ways to well-being challenge.
These are proven ways that can help improve mental health and all round wellbeing.

This men’s suicide prevention charity help men through the power of conversation. #ItsOkayToTalk
Free support groups run every Monday from 7pm (except bank hols). Men can open up about things affecting their lives in a safe, judgement-free and non-clinical environment. There's no pressure and no obligation to speak if you prefer.

This group enjoy a range of activities and they are celebrating PRIDE month. |
They're helping each other, learning new skills, growing in confidence and improving both their mental and physical health.
Some of the group will be attending various PRIDE events including a trip to Bridlington Pride in July and Black Pride in London.
The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at BCB Radio, 11 Rawson Road, Bradford BD1 3SH.

Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month
Tackling prejudice through celebration, education and raising awareness, helps to, change the story, and amplify the voices of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers.
Partners across Bradford, including Leeds GATE, have worked together to organise family, fun activities.
There’s also an exhibition at Cartwright Hall, “Dreams and Songs to Sing” throughout the month and beyond which celebrates Gypsy, Roma and Traveller heritage with photographs and artwork.
Diabetes Awareness Week: 10 - 16 June

More than 1 in 10 adults in Bradford district has Diabetes. |
This is one of the highest rates in the UK and some people are more at risk than others. There’s lots of things you can do to reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes, diet and exercise are important, but you don’t need to change your whole life.

There will be live music, performance art, bubbles, face painting, bouncy castles, stalls, games, a make-your-own smoothie bike, free fruit and water, guest visits by emergency services, the Living Well Team and more! Everyone is welcome; there’s no entry fee, and the attractions and entertainments are free too!

My Life, My City: Movie competition
Aged 11-18? Live in Bradford district? Why not enter this fantastic competition?
Tell your story with a 5 minute movie or animation. They can be in any style, but need to focus on one of the following:

My Life: A movie of your life growing up from birth to now using old photos and video clips.

My City: A movie about your city and the place you live.
-
My Life, My City: A combination of both of the above.
There are five first prizes of £500 and ten runner up prizes of £100 and the winning movies will be shown as part of City of Culture 2025.
The deadline to submit your finished movies is 1st October 2024.

The Start for Life ‘If They Could Tell You’ campaign is now live, it's about the importance and benefits of strong parent and infant relationships. There are also lots of resources on the Start for Life website.
Join Us Move Play (JU:MP) have relaunched JU:MP Outdoors to encourage families with children 5 - 14 years, to go outdoors and play, no matter the weather!
There’s lots of ideas for games and activities you and your family can play on their website.

Anyone for tennis?
StreetGames are leading on an exciting tennis project in Bradford. They want to take tennis into the heart of local communities, working with children and young people 4 - 18 years.
They're offering organisations and community venues £500 worth of equipment to bring tennis to children in their communities.

It’s been a year since the Living Well Community Health Development Team started working in your local communities, trying to make it easier for everyone to lead a happier and healthier lifestyle!
Some of our highlights:
- Talked to 12,652 people at 112 community events
- Attended 19 health checks in local communities and faith settings, speaking to 1,250 people
- Talked to over 4,000 people at 20 HAF events across 30 wards
- Supported more than 30 community groups and brought in over £30,000 in funding for some of those groups
- Attended the Bradford Food Festival, the launch of Bradford’s Good Food Strategy, Baby Week Bradford and Self-Care Week, to name a few!
They also worked really hard to tell people about our Living Well campaigns:

A six week course for manual wheelchair users to learn to navigate tight spaces, kerbs and more. Support is one-to-one so places are limited.

Manningham Library Women’s Group: Every Wednesday. 9.45am outside the main entrance of Manningham Library.
Men’s Groups
Karmand Centre: Tuesdays 11am - 12pm. Exercise group, improving physical and mental wellbeing for men.
Laisterdyke Hub: Thursdays 11am - 12pm. Stretching, balancing, strength building exercises.
Laisterdyke Hub: First Thursday of every month 11am - 12.30pm. Creative sessions and “gup shup” (chit chat sessions). Weekly walks, and Walking for Life in parks with walk leaders.

CP5 Maternity Circle
A free, informal drop-in, which will “open the door” to other support services, health advice, and wellbeing support for pregnant mums and mums with children up to the age of two years.
