UPDATE - Bradford City Centre Walking and Cycling Improvements Scheme
This week's construction, traffic, and access updates
Sunbridge Road
What: On Sunbridge Road, works are continuing on both sides of the road to the footpaths and cycle lanes.
Traffic management: The eastbound lane closure on Sunbridge Road, between Barry Street and Godwin Street, will remain in place. Vehicles travelling eastbound are being diverted along Barry Street.
Sackville Street will continue to remain closed to through traffic.
Vehicles will still be able to access Southgate while the cycle lane works are happening.
Why: This work will provide wider footpaths and introduce cycle lanes. Three new bus shelters will also be put in place for bus routes travelling out of the city centre.
Westgate
What: On Westgate, work to reshape the kerbline at the top of the hill at the Godwin Street junction, to suit the reversed traffic flow, is underway.
Traffic management: Westgate will continue to be reduced to one lane travelling eastbound by the junction with Godwin Street.
Why: Works at this junction are being carried out now that the one-way system on Kirkgate and Westgate has been reversed. This change will provide more space for bus stops and routes into the city.
Godwin Street
What: Next week, work will continue on the central reservation and central islands on Godwin Street and Prince’s Way. Work is also underway on the corner of Godwin Street and Sunbridge Road.
Traffic management: There will continue to be lane closures and traffic management along Godwin Street between Westgate and Jacobs Well while this work is being carried out. Vehicles travelling southbound on Godwin Street wishing to make a right turn onto Sunbridge Road to head west (out of town) are being diverted via Westgate and Kirkgate.
Why: This work will create space for an additional lane for buses heading into the city centre.
Jacobs Well, Prince’s Way and City Park
What: At Jacobs Well, works are continuing in preparation for the filling in of the roundabout and the underpass, and work to fill in the three underpass sections has begun.
Traffic management: There will continue to be lane closures and traffic management around Jacobs Well and approaches while this work is being carried out.
Why: This work will see Jacobs Well roundabout removed as it will no longer be needed when Hall Ings is closed to motor traffic in early 2024.
Senior Way, Croft Street and Manchester Road
What: Next week, work will continue along the southern side of Croft Street and northern side of Senior Way to create new lanes for traffic. New drainage and highway widening works at these locations are in also progress.
Traffic management: The current lane closures around the Croft Street Gyratory and Manchester Road will remain in place.
Why: The works here are to create an additional lane on the gyratory section of Croft Street in each direction.
Lower Kirkgate
What: We are continuing to carry out traffic signal and kerbing works at the Canal Road junction. On the northbound side, opposite M&S, work is continuing in preparation for the new cycleway on Lower Kirkgate.
Traffic management: The taxi rank opposite M&S on Lower Kirkgate is no longer in use and will permanently be removed to make way for a new cycleway. The taxi rank opposite River Island on Lower Kirkgate is still in use.
Why: The works here are to widen the junction to Canal Road, to allow for improved cycle lane provision.
Cheapside
What: We are continuing to install a new pedestrian crossing outside the Midland Hotel.
Traffic management: While this work is happening, pedestrian access is being maintained with signs in place and a temporary crossing available to help people navigate their way around.
Why: This work will create a new crossing link into the city centre.
Church Bank
What: Next week, work to construct the new road junction on Church Bank leading into Well Street will continue.
Traffic management: There are two-way temporary traffic lights on Church Bank while this work is ongoing.
Why: This work will allow for the new link between Church Bank and Well Street.
Well Street, Vicar Lane, and Hall Ings
What: On Well Street, Vicar Lane, and Hall Ings, the installation of new drainage and kerbs is continuing.
Traffic management: Hall Ings will continue to be reduced to one lane of traffic westbound between the junction with George Street and the junction with Vicar Lane.
The lane closure on Vicar Lane at the corner of West Street will also remain in place while this work is being carried out.
On Well Street, pedestrian routes are maintained around the works, and signs will be in place to help those in the city centre navigate their way around.
Why: The works on Well Street will allow the street to be reopened as a two-way bus corridor on the east side of the Broadway Centre.
The work on Vicar Lane and Hall Ings will allow for the reconnection of Vicar Lane to Hall Ings, with a new ‘CYCLOPS’ junction being introduced. This will allow the new bus route on Well Street to connect with the Interchange via Bridge Street.

Improving cycle routes in our city centre
As part of the Bradford City Centre Walking and Cycling Improvements Scheme, new cycle infrastructure is being constructed. Across our city centre, routes are being improved to make cycling and wheeling easier and safer.
The new cycle infrastructure has been designed following National Government’s LTN 1/20 guidance. This guidance sets standards that are advised when designing high-quality and safe cycle infrastructure.
The core design principle of this guidance is accessibility for all and states that infrastructure should be:
- Coherent
- Direct
- Safe
- Comfortable
- Attractive
Following this guidance, the new cycle lanes have been designed to connect up the city centre and link to existing cycling routes. Improved signage will also be introduced so that cyclists can navigate the best route through the city centre.
Where possible, cyclists will be physically segregated from traffic and pedestrians, and where pedestrians and cyclists share surfaces sufficient space will be provided to enable people to feel safe.
There will also be adequate width provided on cycle lanes to enable cyclists to overtake safely, and secure cycle parking will be created.
Traffic delays within the city centre
We are continuing to monitor delays around the city centre on key routes. We have seen delays of around 10 minutes on average.
We can all play our part to reduce these delays by continuing to:
- Plan ahead
- Travel outside peak times
- Take public transport
- Share car journeys
- Walk, cycle or wheel
- Allow more time
- Avoid blocking junctions
- Stick to traffic light signals

Due to a collapsed sewer, Yorkshire Water will be carrying out essential sewer repairs on North Parade in Bradford city centre from Monday 9 October.
Unfortunately because of the complex nature and the depth of the excavation the road will need to be closed so the work can be carried out safely.
Work will be carried out seven days-a-week between 8am and 5pm, and it is expected to last ten days. There will be a diversion route in place.
 Subject to weather conditions resurfacing will be taking place on:
- Thornton Road with temporary 2-way traffic lights between Godfrey St and Lane Ends Close - Monday 16 to Friday 20 October between 9.30am and 2.30pm, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October between 7.30am to 7pm and Monday 23 to Friday 27 October between 9.30am and 7pm. Due to its length this will be done in three sections.
- Horton Grange Road which will be closed 70m either side of the zebra crossing near Spencer Road and Woodhead Road on Sunday 5 November 7.30m between and 7pm.
- Nursery Road in Clayton which will be closed between Reva Syke Road and John Street - Monday 6, Wednesday 8 and Tuesday 14 November between 9.30am and 7pm.
- Laisteridge Lane which will be closed between Great Horton Road and Sherborne Road - Tuesday 7, Wednesday 8 and Wednesday 15 November between 9.30am and 7pm.
- Halifax Road in Wibsey which will be closed between St Paul’s Avenue and Buttershaw Lane - Monday 13 to Friday 17 November and on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 November between 9.30am and 7pm. Due to its length this will be done in two sections.
