What is a zine? Zines are non-commercial, self-published booklets that are typically reproduced using a copy machine. They provide a safe space for their creator to freely express themselves and share their art, words, and thoughts with a chosen (and often niche) audience. Most zines are produced in batches of 1,000 or fewer, and many are produced in editions of less than 100.

A Brief History of the Zine Before the the Internet, zines allowed people to create networks, share ideas, and creatively collaborate. The first zines were created in the 1930s, when artists rendered their own science fiction fanzines, or “fan magazines.” During the Beat generation of the 1950s and 1960s, independent authors self-published zines that explored their views on culture and politics. Zines continue to be a medium of creative expression allowing people to have a voice outside of mainstream media.

All welcome
