Work will begin on Monday 10 July 2023 to deliver our ambitious proposals which are set to reshape the heart of Bradford and elevate the district. These vital improvements are being delivered through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Transforming Cities Fund programme and are set to deliver the perfect stage for the district's UK City of Culture celebrations in 2025,
The Bradford City Centre Walking and Cycling Improvements Scheme has been designed to play a key role in our ambitious plans to boost the regeneration of the city centre, to help make Bradford one of the UK’s leading 21st century cities.
We’re creating new public and green spaces, and transforming transport and travel into and around the city centre, improving routes and facilities for public transport, walking and cycling, to encourage people to leave the car at home.
Project timeline
From Monday 10 July work will begin to modify junctions around the city centre to accommodate new routes for buses.
From early 2024 new bus routes will come into effect, and buses will no longer travel through the heart of the city centre. Instead they will be routed around the core along dedicated bus routes to improve reliability and journey times.
From early 2025 the final elements of the scheme will be installed, such as greenery and benches.
Construction, traffic, and access updates
When works begin on Monday 10 July, Bradford Council and our project partners will do everything possible to minimise delays and provide the information you need.
Please check the Future Bradford website for regular updates and information.
You can plan the best routes for your journey by checking live congestion reports and seeing exactly where road works for all construction projects are across the whole district by visiting: one.network/uk/bradford. The main period during which delays are likely to occur is July 2023 to January 2024, while works are underway to roads surrounding the heart of the city centre.
Plan your journey:
There are a number of ways you can minimise delays to your journeys and help the district to keep moving.
- Plan ahead by checking the latest information before you travel. Please be aware that all journeys may be affected, including those in buses and cars.
- Travel outside peak times where possible, especially where a journey is not time sensitive.
- Take the bus. One double-decker bus can accommodate the same number of passengers as up to 60 cars, meaning that if more people use the bus, delays will be reduced.
- Share car journeys to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
- Walk or cycle if possible.
- Allow more time for journeys.
Construction - Which roads are going to be affected by roadworks from 10 July:
The works have been planned to be implemented in stages starting from Monday 10 July and will be further developed throughout the course of the week.
We are anticipating that all roads will remain open to traffic, as they currently are, until early 2024 when buses will no longer travel through the heart of the city centre.
Until then, there may be temporary lane closures, temporary traffic lights and temporary changes to footpaths to enable us to make changes to the highway network.
However, you will still be able to access all roads by vehicle. There will be occasional overnight or weekend road closures, where needed, for road surfacing works.
From February 2024, Hall Ings, Bank Street, Market Street, Broadway and some of Bridge Street will not be accessible by car with exceptions for deliveries only.
