75th Anniversary Windrush Special

22 June 2023 will mark the 75th anniversary of the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks in Essex. 

The Windrush Generation, who arrived between 1948 and 1971, and their descendants have made significant contributions to the social, cultural and economic fabric of the United Kingdom.

A series of events and activities are taking place across the Bradford district to celebrate this significant milestone.

Friday 16 & Saturday 17 June Centenary Square FREE

The event is a FREE two-day celebration of our Windrush Generations and communities. There will be live bands, a fun fair, local radio and club DJs, and amazing international food.

Civic Windrush Flag Raising Ceremony

Thursday 22 June 10.30am, Centenary Square FREE

Join this FREE civic ceremony to raise the official Windrush flag. A complimentary Windrush pin badge for the first 50 participants in attendance. All welcome.


Windrush Cricket - 75 Not Out

Friday 23 June 12noon onwards, Bradford Park Avenue Cricket Ground, FREE

One of the sports that the Windrush Generation embraced and excelled at was cricket. This event will feature elders from the Windrush Generation, who will showcase their skills and share their stories with the younger generation. Cricket Festival and domino tournament. Windrush Stories: Don't Give Up exhibition

Friday 23 June - 3 July, Bradford Literature Hub FREE

An extraordinary exhibition co-curated by three young people with African and Caribbean heritage and developed by Nigel Guy, Director of Windrush Generations, in partnership with Jill Iredale of Bradford Council's Museums and Galleries Service and the British Library.

It shares the poignant stories of 22 Windrush elders and their offspring who journeyed from around the world and came to settle in the Bradford district. These touching reflections and words of wisdom are memorialised for all to see, hear and celebrate.

Finding Home

Hear the incredible story of Alford Gardner, who travelled on the Empire Windrush from Jamaica in 1948. Now in his late 90s, Alford is one of the few passengers still alive and has written about his experiences for the first time.

Alford and his son Howard will appear at this special in-conversation event, chaired by Nigel Guy, to discuss the experience of the Windrush generation, the legacy they bequeathed and what it means to younger generations today.

This talk will follow straight after the premiere of the Windrush film Finding Home, created by Jacaranda Books in partnership with Fane.

Film screening and Q&A: Windrush: Movement of the people

Saturday 24 June 7pm-8.15pm. John Stanley Bell (JSB) Lecture Theatre, The University of Bradford. Tickets £7

A special screening of Phoenix Dance Theatre’s dazzling performance of Sharon Watson’s Windrush: Movement of the People.

This groundbreaking production celebrates the rise of multicultural Britain and features an uplifting soundtrack with calypso, jazz, gospel and reggae. The first contemporary dance work to explore the story behind the arrival of HMT Windrush Empire.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with choreographer and former Artistic Director, Sharon Watson MBE, DL and Christella Litras, who created the original score, and will be chaired by Colin Grant. More information and book tickets here.


STORIES UNLOCKED: My name is Sunshine Simpson

Saturday 25 June 2pm-2.45pm, Back Store, Waterstones. FREE

We all need a bit of sunshine in our lives – Sunshine Simpson! Come and meet Sunshine’s creator, G.M. Linton and join her for this fun storytelling session where you’ll learn about the joyful legacy of the Windrush Generation.

In My Name is Sunshine Simpson, our sunny protagonist tries to go on adventures like her grandad tells her, but bad luck keeps getting in the way. Her new friend Evie is fast becoming a FRENEMY, her home haircut is a DISASTER, and the school showcase is so STRESSFUL! Everything seems to be going wrong!

Sunshine needs to find her voice, but can she break through the clouds to stand tall, stand proud, and show the world she can shine like the hero she is? Join G.M. as she invites you to celebrate your own family, heritage and community, all the things that help us shine brightly – just like Sunshine Simpson.

The Joy of Windrush: The Windrush Generations Celebrate

25 June 2023 5pm-7pm - Bradford Alhambra Theatre. FREE

A commemorative service of thanksgiving and celebration will be hosted by Windrush Generations who will take over the Alhambra Theatre.

This special service will provide the opportunity for churches to come together in joyous fellowship as we recognise and reflect on the vital role played by this generation in Bradford and beyond to honour their legacy.

This Windrush Generations event is FREE for all to attend, but please reserve to ensure your space.
