Emergency Alerts Test Sunday 23 April at 3pm

Emergency Alerts System

A reminder that the Emergency Alerts System will be tested on Sunday 23 April at 3pm.

The Emergency Alerts system will warn people, through their mobile phone, about serious nearby imminent risk to life, such as wildfires or severe flooding. It is similar to those used by other countries across the world.

In an emergency, mobile phone masts in the surrounding area will broadcast an alert. Compatible mobile phones or tablets in range of the mast will receive the alert.

You do not need to turn on location services to receive alerts and the Government does not know your phone number or location. Data about you, your device or location won't be collected or shared.

If you’re driving or riding when you get an alert

  • Do not read or respond to an emergency alert while driving or riding.
  • Find somewhere safe and legal to stop before reading the message. If there’s nowhere safe and legal to stop, and nobody else is in the vehicle to read the alert, you can listen to news on live radio to find out about the emergency.
  • It’s illegal to use a hand-held device while driving or riding.
