Bradford’s work in combatting air pollution and improving children’s health is praised by England’s top doctor
Bradford has been praised by England’s top doctor for the way it is improving the community’s health, especially among children, by reducing air pollution.
Professor Sir Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England, paid a fact-finding visit to the city in the spring for a first hand insight into the way it is breaking new ground in improving air quality.
In his annual report published on Thursday December 8, he has heralded the partnership between Bradford Council, the Born in Bradford (BiB) research project based at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and public health teams as an example of best practice.

Do I need to pay the daily CAZ charge?
You now need to pay a daily charge to drive in the Bradford Clean Air Zone (CAZ) if your vehicle does not meet required emission standards and is not exempt.
- Passenger cars and motorbikes will not be charged for entering the Bradford Clean Air Zone. It doesn’t matter if you live outside the Bradford District or if you use your vehicle for work purposes.
- HGVs, coaches, buses, LGV, minibuses, hackney carriage and private hire vehicles are liable for the charge if they are not compliant with the Clean Air Zone vehicle standard.
Please check if your your vehicle is chargeable on the Government website.
How do I make my payment?
Payment must be made online at www.gov.uk/clean-air-zones or by calling the National Contact Centre on 0300 029 8888 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm, and Saturday, 8am to 4pm).
You can pay 6 days before the day of your visit, on the day of your visit or up to 6 days after the day of your visit.
A 'day' is classified as midnight to midnight, not 24 hours from when you enter the zone. During that midnight to midnight timeframe, you can enter and leave the zone numerous times and only incur a single charge. However, if you cross the midnight threshold you will be charged for two days.
You will receive a £120 penalty charge plus the road user charge if you drive a non-compliant vehicle in the Bradford CAZ and fail to pay any daily charge due within the payment window.
If you pay the PCN within 14 days of the date of service, the PCN is reduced to £60. You will still have to pay the outstanding CAZ charge.
