Clean Air Zone - Are you ready?

There are only 30 days to go until the Bradford Clean Air Zone is live on Monday, 26 September 2022.

Bradford is ready! Are you?

With only 30 days to go until the launch many Bradford businesses have taken advantage of grants to upgrade their vehicles and are only using cleaner vehicles to drive in and around our District.

We are particularly impressed with the uptake from the private hire sector where over 90% of taxi vehicles are now compliant giving us one of the cleanest taxi fleets in the Country.

We have also seen the upgrade of over 370 buses ensuring all scheduled and tendered services meet Clean Air Zone standard with 33 new electric buses expected to start running on busy routes next year.

On top of this £8.4m in grants have been allocated to assist businesses to upgrade over 20% of all lorries registered in the District and over 3,400 grants have been applied for in the funding categories (HGV, Bus, Coach, LGV, Minibus and Taxis.)

What do I need to do?

The most important thing to do is find out if your vehicle will be charged for driving into the Bradford Clean Air Zone.

You can use the government website, to check whether charges will apply to your vehicle in Bradford and other Zones. If you’re a business or organisation, you can check multiple vehicles.

Grants are still available

Join the many Bradford businesses that have already applied for LGV and minibus grants. If your business is based in the Bradford district, don’t miss your chance to apply for part of our £10.3 million Government funding.

In order to be eligible your business must have been registered at an address within the Bradford Metropolitan District prior to 18 October 2021 and at the time of grant application. The business must own a non-compliant vehicle registered to the same address from prior to 18 October 2021 and at the time of application.

Grants are not available to any applicant who has already upgraded or bought a compliant vehicle. Grants cannot be awarded retrospectively.

With a total of 2,300 grants available, each up to £4,500 per vehicle, the grant covers:

  • the upgrade of non-compliant LGVs and minibuses to Clean Air Zone standards.
  • The purchase of a replacement Clean Air Zone complaint vehicle.

Grants of £4,500 per vehicle are also available for

  • the ongoing running costs of a fully electric vehicle (where owned or leased for a minimum of 2 years). The grant will be paid in 2 annual instalments.

Grants will be available to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), Sole Traders/self-employed, education establishments and charities registered within the Bradford Metropolitan District.

CAZ grants are still available

There is still time for Bradford businesses and residents to apply for an exemption. If you are awarded an exemption this means you will not have to pay to drive in the Bradford Clean Air Zone.

On submission of your exemption application form, the council will acknowledge receipt of your application. The council will process applications after receipt of the application within 10 working days of receiving all required information/evidence.

Please submit your exemption application including all required evidence as soon as possible to ensure we can process your exemption prior to the CAZ launch date.

You can find out about exemptions here. A local exemption does not apply until is has been registered with and confirmed by Bradford Council. If you enter the clean air zone before an exemption is confirmed by email, you will still be liable for any charges incurred once the zone is live.
