‘Made by young people, for young people!’
A new exhibition curated by seven Healthy Minds Apprentices aged 16 – 24 opens at Cartwright Hall on 2 July. They were recruited by the Clinical Commissioning Group of Bradford and Craven Care Trust to work as ambassadors for young people’s mental health. As part of this year-long project, the apprentices have created an exhibition that offers a genuine and interesting insight into how children and young people are affected by, struggle with, and manage and celebrate their mental health and wellbeing.
Working with three All Star Entertainments project workers, and in partnership with our Bradford District Museums and Galleries staff, it is an engaging and thought provoking exhibition that uses creative and personalised ways to capture children and young people’s opinions, thoughts, views and experiences of mental health in this ever-changing world.
Collaborators include Youth In Mind, Youth Music, Born In Bradford: Age Of Wonder, Carolyn Mendelsohn (Through Our Lens), Young In Covid, Bradford Youth Service, Equity Partnership and a number of community centres, primary and secondary schools across the Bradford and Craven District.

Story Trails - discover hidden histories and untold stories
We’re delighted Bradford district has been chosen as one of 15 locations across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to take part in StoryTrails, a one-of-a-kind experience where untold stories from the past are brought to life using augmented and virtual reality and the voices of the local community.
As the UK’’s largest immersive storytelling project, it will change the way we tell stories about ourselves, animating public spaces across the UK and inspiring a national conversation about who we are and where we are going.
Come down to City Park and City Library on 22 and 23 July to discover a range of exciting augmented and virtual reality experiences for all the family to enjoy.
Explore the Bradford district’s untold stories through a virtual map made up of 3D models and audio recordings of local community members. Outside, take part in immersive StoryTrails walking tours, where a free app will guide you around the places where history happened, bringing the events to life before your very eyes.
StoryTrails is part of 'UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK', a ground-breaking UK-wide celebration of creativity in 2022.
Primary school children raise awareness
Hundreds of primary school children from across the Bradford district came together to raise awareness of the plight of refugees, specifically children forced to flee their homes in search of safety. The district’s primary schools have been taking part in a major project, inspired by the book Boy 87, which tells the story of a young Syrian refugee.
Every Year 6 pupil across the Bradford district has been given their own copy of the book to keep and it has been used by teachers as the basis for learning in all areas of the curriculum including English, maths, art and music. The books were paid for by the Bradford Opportunity Area. Bradford Council also helped fund the project and a number of local organisations supported the Big Day Out celebration event. The project culminated in a celebration event with around 1,500 pupils gathering at Bradford City’s stadium during Refugee Week.
COVID memorial park and stone plaque to be unveiled in Ilkley
The official opening of a Covid memorial park will take place in Ilkley this weekend. The Paradise Park Memorial Gardens will be opened and a memorial stone plaque will be unveiled at the ceremony on Sunday 3 July at 2pm in Riverside Gardens in Ilkley.
The area set aside for the new memorial is in a quiet area of the park near to the old bridge and has been planted daffodil bulbs and a cherry tree walk with a new path complementing the memorial stone.
A fundraising appeal was set up in March last year by local ward councillors, Anne Hawkesworth and Kyle Green, to raise money to install this permanent tribute to those who died in the area during the pandemic. Money was donated via our Area Committee, with officers from the committee also providing support to the project.
Local business Moss and Moor Garden Centre in Ilkley donated the cherry trees and daffodil bulbs which were planted by the Friends of Ilkley Riverside Park.
Project Gigabit Consultation
The government is on a mission to deliver lightning-fast, reliable broadband to everyone in the UK and is investing £5 billion in Project Gigabit to ensure that hard-to-reach communities are not left out.
Building Digital UK (BDUK) is carrying out a Public Review to help identify areas in West Yorkshire and parts of North Yorkshire that may be suitable for future public funding for gigabit-capable broadband.
BDUK is seeking information and supporting evidence from suppliers - in relation to the presence of gigabit-capable broadband infrastructure within the project area.
They wish to hear from all relevant stakeholders - including the public, businesses, internet service providers and broadband infrastructure operators - particularly in relation to the proposed mapped eligible areas.
This public review closes on 18 July 2022 at 5pm.
Development levy could boost local projects
Local schools, parks and sports facilities, libraries, active travel and environmental projects could receive a £709,000 funding boost thanks to our Community Infrastructure Levy, a fund set up to relieve property development pressures across the district.
A significant proportion of the fund could be assigned to the district’s primary and secondary schools with £312,000 proposed to go to local education. If approved, this would be spent on supporting additional mainstream school places and specialist places for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.
Council Executive to consider Swedish model of road safety
Bradford could implement a Scandinavian model for road casualty reduction if proposals are agreed by our Executive to adopt a new West Yorkshire approach.
First developed in 1995 in Sweden, Vision Zero revolutionised conventional thinking around road safety by taking a whole system approach and focusing on prevention of deaths and injuries rather than just road traffic accidents.
The approach uses five key pillars to reduce deaths and injuries including: Safe Speeds, Safe Vehicles, Safe Roads, Safe Behaviours and Post Collision Learning and Support.
